At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 14th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where they had a larger show of 520 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with a smaller show of 1561prime and cast sheep forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 351 cast cows and stock bulls were forward to a keen ringside of buyers which ensured all classes sold sharper on the week.

Messrs Bell, Far Broom run of great cows topped at 825kg, 206.5ppk or £1703 for a British Blue cross and to 880kg, 149.5ppk or £1315 for a Limousin cross purchased by Kenny McCreery and Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley, Hexham sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 858kg, 163.5ppk or £1402 and was purchased by Messrs Worsley and a Limousin cross from the same home sold for 680kg, 179.5ppk or £1220 purchased by Jewitts. Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow which sold for 729kg, £1337 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Norman, Little Orton run of Limousin cross  cows topped at 830kg, 147.5ppk or £1224 and was purchased on behalf of Worsley. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Aikhead, Wigton run of cows topped at 939kg, 129.5ppk or £1216 for a Limousin cross purchased by Kenny McCreery. Messrs Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth run of cows topped at 730kg, 164.5ppk or £1200 for a Limousin cross purchased by Messrs Worsley.

A large show of 14 stock bulls were on offer with trade being 20p up on the week. Messrs Ivinson & Sons, Skelling Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 979kg, 175.5ppk or £1718 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrison, The Tofts sold a Limousin stock bull for 1076kg, 148.5ppk or £1597 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Neill & Sons, Thornington Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1008kg, 150.5ppk or £1517 again to Owain Llyr. Messrs McKelvey, Burnside sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 926kg, 163.5ppk or £1514 to Kenny McCreery. Messrs Palmer, Grange Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1055kg, 141.5ppk or £1492 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

A large show of dairy cross cows were forward on Monday with well fleshed cows being 10p up on the week, however plainer cows were a similar trade.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 758kg, 138.5ppk to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold an outstanding Holstein cross cow which topped at 877kg, 114.5ppk or £1004 to Kenny McCreery. Messrs Mosscrop & Waugh, Albyfield good run of Friesian cows topped at 905kg, 109.5ppk or £990 also to Kenny McCreery. Ling Dairies sold a Holstein cross cow for 710kg, 139.5ppk or £990to Steven Bowes.

Prime Bulls: An increased entry of 118 prime bulls were forward, with black and whites and light to middle weight continental types selling similar on the week, however heavy types selling much dearer on the week. Topping the day’s trade at £2057.83 was a Charolais from Messrs Wight, Townfoot, Biggar and was purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland. Limousins sold to £1964.03 from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick and was purchased by Mr Geoff Nutter. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray hill, Lockerbie sold another to £1870 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blues sold to £1901.52 from Messrs Watret, Maulscastle, Annan, and Simmentals to £1496.30 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie.

Top pence per kilo of 223.5ppk was attained by Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle and was purchased by Bookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

Black and white bred bulls topped at £1200.54 from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie and was purchased by Geoff Nutter. Top pence per kilo of 179.5ppk was achieved by Ross Raven, Durdar House, Carlisle, and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Prime Cattle: A smaller entry of 52 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling slightly less money on the week. Top overall was paid to Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie with a superb Limousin cross steer purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Another from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold to £1603.52. Charolais sold to £1437.36 from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill Farm, Lockerbie and was purchased by GP Watson, Norwich. Simmentals from the same home sold to £1434.41and were also purchased by Messrs Watson. Top pence per kilo of 224p was paid to Hoddamtown for the aforementioned Limousin cross.

Heifers were forward in good numbers and topped at £1539.70 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 227.5ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton and was purchased by Brookwood Abattoir and secondly by Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle, purchased by Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle.

Prime Hoggs and Cast Ewes – A smaller show of prime hoggs were forward this week, with export lambs remaining very good to sell, and an SQQ of 202ppk being achieved, however heavy types were in less demand and failed to reach recent rates, with other outlets struggling to place them. A sale average of £85.01 still shows a good return for all classes.

Best types sold well, and to a top of £114.80 for a splendid pen of Texel crosses from Messrs Mounsey, Ashfield, Laversdale, which sold to Mr Robert Skelton. The run of hoggs from Ashfield averaged £111.60 per head.

Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie sold the top price pen per kilo at 271ppk, this was a sublime pen of Beltex hoggs which sold to Mr A Dawson.

An increased number of ewes sold to a top of £131.50 for Texels from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg. Hill ewes sold to £72.50 for Cheviots from Roachburn.
