At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 21st January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where they had a larger show of 520 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with a smaller show of 1750 prime and cast sheep forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 395 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to a large ringside of 24 keen buyers, which ensured that all classes would be sharper on the week, with better beef cows being 7 ½ pence up on the week.
Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 930kg, 232.5ppk or £2162 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall run of cows topped at 872kg, 213.5ppk or £1861 and to 857kg, 213.5ppk or £1829 for a British Blue cow, both of which were purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Telfer & Son also sold a British Blue cow for 927kg, 179.5ppk or £1663 again to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe run of Limousin cows topped at 893kg, 184.5ppk or £1647 and to 880kg, 179.5ppk or £1579, purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick and Kenny McCreery. Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall also sold a British Blue cow for 825kg, 193.5ppk or £1596 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Hall run of Limousin cows topped at 933kg, 156.5ppk or £1460 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow, which sold for 870kg, 164.5ppk or £1431 to Malcolm Allan.

Messrs Beaty, Newton Field sold Holstein cross cows to a top of 737kg, 144.5ppk or £1064 and to 742kg, 137.5ppk or £1020, purchased by Les Fell and Steven Bowes.

Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle achieving £1672.59 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria receiving £1662.52. The same home also sold top priced British Blue cross to £1615.35. Top pence per kilo of 227.5ppkwas achieved by Messrs Story, Newbigging Farm, Carlisle purchased by Messrs wilson, Corby Hill Butchers, Carlisle.
Heifers seen a day’s top of £1523.04 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle. This heifer was also top overall pence per kilo of 250.5ppk and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blues sold to £1402.25 from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream. Prime Hoggs and Cast Ewes – A larger entry of prime sheep on the week met a much sharper trade then had been forecast with an overall average of 194p being achieved, export weight sold very well to average 207p SQQ which equates to £86.04 a head. The sale topped at £117.80 for a fabulous pen of Beltex hoggs shown by Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport and selling to Mr G Lomax. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop sold a great pen of 5 Texel x hoggs to top per kilo at 281p (40.5kg £113.80 per head) to Mr A Dawson. Mule hoggs sold to £90 a head for a pen of heavies from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton and to 196.8p per kilo for a pen from Messrs Brough, Chapel House, Uldale. Hill lambs sold to £86.30 for a wonderful pen of Cheviot lambs from Messrs Wilson, Woodside, Wreay and to 202.1ppk for a great run of Blackfaced hoggs from Messrs D Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown.
A good show of 260 cast ewes were forward averaging £5-6 dearer on the week and meeting a pleasing trade throughout. Topping the trade was a pair of Texel ewes from D Waugh, Albyfield selling for £111. Mules were in great demand with pens regularly selling for over the £60 mark. Many more needed to satisfy demand.
