Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 348 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with a keen ring side of buyers ensuring a great trade once again.
Mr Thomas Wilson, Wood Farm sold a Limousin cow for 874kg, 182.5ppk or £1595 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Grey, The Farmhouse run of cows topped at 860kg, 183.5ppk or £1578 for a Limousin cross purchased by Kenny McCreery. Messrs Henderson, Low Side run of outstanding cows topped at 885kg, 172.5ppk or £1526 for a Blonde and to 845kg, 171.5ppk or £1449 for a British Blue cross purchased by Kenny McCreery. Messrs James, Low Todholes sold the top priced British Blue cow which sold for 734kg, 197.5ppk or £1449 also to Kenny McCreery. Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 848kg, 164.5ppk or £1394 to Mr McGimpsey. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill run of young cows topped at 603kg, 195.5ppk or £1187 for a Limousin cross purchased by Kenny McCreery, also from the same home a Simmental cross to 678kg, 190.5ppk or £1291 purchased by Les Fell.

Messrs Cannon, Espland Hill sold a Holstein cross for 722kg, 156.5ppk ro £1129 purchase by Les Fell. How End Farms sold a run of Holstein crosses, topping at 716kg, 156.5ppk or £1120 also to Mr Fell. Prime Bulls: A larger entry of 99 prime bulls would sell 5-8 pence less on the week for plainer bulls with good shaped and fleshed bulls achieving a similar good trade. Top overall was a Blonde cross from Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport receiving £1644.27 purchased by Sean McGimpsey; the same vendors sold the top priced Charolais cross to £1554.25 and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Limousins peaked at £1629.18 from Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie.
Top overall pence per kilo of 229.5p was attained by Messrs Little, The Guards, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston; Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Morpeth sold a further two to 227.5p purchased by Geoff Nutter.

Top overall was an outstanding Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton achieving £1725.08 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Gate, Hollins Farm, Cockermouth sold another to £1717.24 and purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland. Top pence per kilo of 226.5p was attained by Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods.
Heifers seen a day’s top of £1592.59 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont purchased by Pioneer Foods and top pence per kilo of 224.5p was received by Messrs Vevers, High Stenries, Lockerbie purchased again by Pioneer Foods.

Prime Hoggs – The weekly sale of prime sheep, attracted similar numbers to that of last week, with well finished hoggs meeting a firm demand for all weight ranges.
Topping the sale this week was Messrs Laird, Unity Farm, Brampton who sold a great pen of four Dutch Texel hoggs to £115.80 or 289.5ppk to Mr Andrew Dawson. The sale peaked at 300ppk for a fantastic pen of 36kg Beltex hoggs from Messrs Dempster, Castle Hill, Lockerbie who sold others to 292.6ppk and a pen of 25 at 279ppk, all of the above were purchased by Mr Andrew Dawson.
The weekly sale also included the Annual show and sale of Blackfaced and Swaledale hoggs, which was kindly judged by Mr M McIntyre, Hawes. The winning pen of heavy Blackfaced hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown topped the section at £89 a head and were purchased by the Judge. The 1st prize pen of Swaledales from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Brampton sold for £79 or 195.1ppk again to McIntryre Meats. The 1st prize pen of lightweight Blackfaced hoggs were consigned by Mr D Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and sold to 197.4ppk also to the judge.

Cast Ewes and Rams: The weekly sale of cast ewes and rams had a good entry forward, with well fleshed sheep, being keenly bid for.
Topping the sale was a pen of Texel ewes from Messrs Donald, Lamonby selling to £129.50. Mules saw the biggest rise on the week with a consignment from Messrs Donald, Denton Mains selling to £86.50.
Hill bred sheep saw a rise of £13 on the week overall, with pens of Cheviots from Messrs Edgar, Penrith selling to £53.50.
More sheep are required on a regular basis to satisfy demand.
