At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 4th February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep with a smaller show of 450 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle forward, along with 1623 prime and cast sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 295 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with a larger ringside of buyers ensuring all classes being a good trade and the whole sale averaging 114.7p which was up 6.9p on the week. Whitwell Farms’ run of cows topped at 807kg at 214.5p totalling £1731 for a British Blue x and 801kg at 188.5p totalling £1509 for a Limousin x purchased by Owain Llyr and Andrew Graham. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of Limousin cows topped at 872kg at 188.5p totalling £1643 and 904kg at 177.5p totalling £1604 both purchased by Kenny McCreery. Messrs Bell, Woodhall Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 791kg at 194.5p totalling £1538 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 827kg at 171.5p totalling £1418 bought for Messrs Worsley. Whitwell Farms sold the top price Blonde x cow which sold at 723kg at 185.5p totalling £1333 to Owain Llyr. Beef bred cows averaged 135.6p overall, 4.4p up on the week.

A small show of 5 stock bulls were forward. Messrs Langcake, Isel Old Park sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1060kg at 118.5p totalling £1256 to Sean McGimpsey, Messrs Grainger, Kiln Close Farm sold an Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1098kg at 109.5p totalling £1202 to Sean McGimpsey.
A mixed show of Black & White cows were on offer with all classes being in great demand. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold an outstanding Holstein x cow for 774kg at 120.5p totalling £1173 to Kenny McCreery. Messrs Brown, Lane End Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 722kg at 156.5p totalling £1129 to Les Fell. Messrs Robinson, Burthholme Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 923kgs at 115.5p totalling £1066 also to Les Fell. Messrs Martin, Orton Grange Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 747kg at 139.5p totalling £1042 to Les Fell. Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House sold a Holstein x cow for 742kg at 139.5p totalling £1035 and 815kg at 123.5p totalling £1006 purchased by Les Fell and Kenny McCreery. Messrs Shepherd, Crownstone Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 649kg at 155.5p totalling £1009 to Steven Bowes.

PRIME BULLS – Yet another good entry of 103 prime bulls were forward, with quality better on the week, with overall trade being slightly better also.
Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries selling to £1785 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blues peaked at £1725.27 twice, from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle, and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Hall also sold another British Blue this time to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.
Top overall pence per kilo of 234.5ppk was a British Blue consigned by Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, selling to Medcalf Ltd, Halifax. The same vendor sold another to 233.5ppk and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Limousin bulls sold to 231.5ppk also from Ainstable Hall and was purchased by Ralph Pearson.
Black and Whites peaked at £1128.05 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Raven, Durdar House, Carlisle, and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick. The Days top pence per kilo of 170.5ppk was paid for a British Friesian form Messrs Nelson, Braithwaite Hall, Carlisle and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE – A good entry of 51 prime steers and heifers were forward, with all classes selling sharper on the week. Top overall was a marvellous Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton achieving £1706.67 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. The same vendor also sold the top pence per kilo of 220.5ppk.
Heifers seen a day’s top of £1583 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Bowscale Farm, Maryport and was also purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Others sold to £1544.78 from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and was purchased by Messrs Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. Charolais to £1573.50 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses sold to £1562.75from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle and was purchased by Mr Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.
Top overall pence per kilo of 245.5ppk was attained by Messrs Dent, Elm House and was purchased by Messrs Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton. The same vendor also sold the top priced British Blue cross to 239.5ppk, also purchased by Messrs Mulholland Butchers.

Prime Hoggs – The weekly sale of prime sheep saw top end export hoggs meet a flying trade throughout the sale to a top of 306.3p for a sensational pen of Texel cross hoggs consigned by Messrs JM & SM Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton purchased by Mr G Lomax. A top price of £117.80 was achieved on two occasions firstly for a great quality pen of Beltex lambs from BR & HM Horsley Ltd, Woodhouse, Catterlen and again for fantastic Dutch Texel lambs from R & BS Laird & Son, Unity Farm, Brampton purchased by Mr G Lomax and Mr A Dawson respectively. Mules sold to a top of £90 from Messrs Smith, Kealmore Hill Farm, Distington and to 185.9p for another pen from the same home.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A good show of ewes were forward with all classes being £5-£6 dearer on the week. Mules met a fantastic trade with better sorts being £10 plus on the week. Topping the sale was a Texel ewe from Mr D Rust, Low Row at £138.50 to Mr Skelton. Mules were regularly over the £70 mark with a top price of £74.50 from Messrs GS Scott, Cockermouth. Hill sheep were in demand with top Swales up to £47.50 for a pen from Messrs Dent, Haydon Bridge. More numbers need for buyers requirements.
