Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 18th February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of 368 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle and 1923 prime and cast sheep were forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 263 cast cows were presented to a smaller ring side of buyers, however trade would be similar on the week.

Messrs Cleasby, Linden House sold an outstanding Charolais heifer for 810kg, 173.5ppk or £1405 and was purchased on behalf of Messrs Worsley. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold three Limousin young cows for 755kg, 179.5ppk or £1355 to Mr Les Fell, 648kg, 205.5p or £1331 to Mr Sean McGimpsey and finally to 661kg, 194.5ppk or £1285 purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis. Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall run of well fleshed cows topped at 855kg, 148.5ppk or £1269 for a British Blue purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and to 817kg, 150.5ppk or £1229 again for British Blue to Messrs Worsley and to 885kg, 138.5ppk or £1225 for a Parthenais again to Messrs Worsley.

Black and white cows sold to a similar trade to last week. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 740kg, 148.5ppk or £1098 and to 716kg, 144.5ppk or £1034both purchased by Les Fell. Messrs Gillespie, High Ploughlands sold a Holstein cross heifer for 653kg, 156.5ppk or £1021 to Mr Kirkpatrick and to 714kg, 136.5ppk, £974 to Mr Fell. Messrs Blamire, Parkhouse Farming sold a Holstein cross heifer for 711kg, 140.5ppk or £998 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold a run of British Friesian heifers for 142.5ppk, 138.5ppk and 133.5ppk. Messrs Shepherd, Crownstone Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 104.5ppk to Messrs Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Nanson & Son, Sorrow Stones sold a Holstein cross heifer for 139.5ppk to Mr Les Fell.

A small offering of five stock bulls were on offer, topping this section at 1252kg, 126.5ppk or £1583 was Messrs Allgood, Nuwick Hall with a British Blue selling to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Storey, Tinnishall sold a Limousin stock bull for 1108kg, 137.5ppk or £1523 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

PRIME BULLS – A much smaller entry of 61 prime bulls forward with all classes maintaining recent rates. Top overall all was a British Blue from Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall, Fife who received £1835 and was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Staberlizers peaked at £1682 for Messrs Allgood, Nunwick Hall, Hexham. Limousins to £1425 for Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn, Appleby and Simmentals to £1381 from Messrs Traffford, Springfield, Cockermouth. Top pence per kilo of 229.5p was achieved by Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn for a Limousin purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir.

Black and whites peaked at £1174 for Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie and top pence per kilo of 178.5p was received by Messrs Graham, Laws Hall, Longtown purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  British Friesians sold to 176.5p for Messrs Preston, Wed Holme House, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE – Yet another very good entry of 53 prime steers and heifers were forward with all classes selling to a similar trade to last week. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow Farm, Carlisle who received £1861.86 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses sold to £1534.85 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle. The same vendor also received top overall pence per kilo of 231.5ppk for another British Blue cross.

Heifers seen a day’s overall top of £1562.84 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousin heifers sold to £1369.55 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, purchased by Mr Steven Wilson, Butcher Shop, Corby Hill. Top pence per kilo of 230.5ppk received by Messrs Story, Newbiggin and purchased by R & J Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton.

Prime Hoggs – The weekly sale of 1737 prime hoggs saw a slight decline in trade on the week with less smart export types on show and over 1000 heavy hoggs in the market. The SQQ for the day levelled at 190ppk. The sale topped at £122.80 per head for a pen of 4 Dutch Texel x hoggs from Messrs Laird, Unity Farm which sold to Mr A Dawson. Messrs Laird also topped per kilo with a pair of Dutch Texels which sold at 281.1p per kilo again to Mr A Dawson. The sale averaged £83.49 per head.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A smaller show forward with ewes maintaining the recent trade. Topping the sale was a pen of Beltex ewes from DJ & A Trafford selling to Mr R Skelton for £130. The same home also had pens at £125, £120 and £113. Mules sold to £68.50 from EM & J Holliday, Wigton. Hill ewes were a good trade with a pen of Cheviots from Messrs Mark, Ousby selling for £84.50 to Mr Lomax. More numbers are needed to satisfy demand with and ever increasing ringside of buyers.
