At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 4th March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of 307 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 2172 cast and prime sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good entry of 307 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday which included 106 beef cows, averaging 138.1ppk up 12.4p on the week. Messrs Dick & Sons, Mains of Throsk run of pure Limousin cows topped at 995kg, 159.5ppk or £1587 and to 883kg, 171.5ppk or £1514 both purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Morpeth run of cows topped at 907kg, £1446 or 159.5ppk for a Limousin purchased by Messrs Worsley. Messrs Johnston, West Whamley sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 1006kg, 136.5ppk or £1373 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold the top priced Parthenais to 748kg, 175.5ppk or £1312 purchased for Messrs Worsley.
Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 658kg, 183.5ppk or £1207 and was purchased by Messrs Worsley, who also purchased Messrs Armour, Milton Farm Aberdeen Angus cross heifer which sold to 178.5ppk. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm sold a Limousin cow for 177.5ppk purchased by Mr George Watson. Messrs Mansergh, Sneck Yeat sold an Aberdeen Angus heifer for 177.5ppk to Mr Alan Jarvis. Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley sold a Limo9usin cross heifer for 177.5ppk to Jewitts Meats. Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 176.5ppk to Mr George Watson.
A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer, with a keen ring side of buyers ensuring a much sharper trade for all classes with more required each week. Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross for 841kg, 138.5ppk or £1164 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ewebank, Tarnhill sold a Holstein cross for 742kg, 146.5ppk or £1087 again to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Cannon, Espland Hill sold a Holstein cross cow for 981kg, 106.5ppk or £1044 to Mr Steven Bowes.

PRIME BULLS – A better entry of 86 prime bulls were forward with more flesh on offer and trade sharper on the week. Top overall came from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton who sold a British Blue to £1863.63 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall run of bulls peaked at £1659.06and to £1601.91 for a Limousin cross. Parthenais bulls peaked at £1399.01 from Messrs Bradley, Marina House, Maryport and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Top pence per kilo of 224.5ppk was received by Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall for the aforementioned British Blue cross.
Black and whites peaked at £1122.73 from Messrs Marrs, Broomhills, Carlisle, and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, and top pence per kilo of 176.5ppk for a British Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton, purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 36 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling slightly easier on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont peaking as £1611.91 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold another to £1583.40. British Blues to £1509.01 again from Messrs Chrichton, Loughrigg.
Top pence per kilo and top overall of 224.5ppk was from the same home, for the aforementioned Limousin cross.
Steer peaked at £1608.68 from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle sold a Limousin to £1573.56 and £1570.14. Topping the pence per kilo in this section was Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks with a Parthenais cross to 220.5ppk from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Rob Medcalf, Brookwoos Abattoir.

Prime Hoggs – At the weekly sale of Prime hoggs attracted a good entry of 2024 head. Again a large number of heavy hoggs (1017) were forward which distorted the overall average with handy weight and best export types finding a pleasing enquiry. The sale topped at £120 for a pair of cracking Texel cross lambs from Messrs W Gate & Son, Home Farm, Gilgarren which sold to Mr A Dawson. Topping per kilo was an outstanding Beltex cross lamb from Messrs McCune, Farewell Grange, Threapland which sold for 305p (36kg £109.80) again to Mr A Dawson.

Cast Ewes and Rams: At the weekly cast sheep sale a good show of sheep were present which were met with a good trade throughout. A lot more lowland sheep were forward with bigger, more meater ewes were met with a pleasant trade. Topping the sale was a pen of Texel was from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, selling to Mr R Skelton from £105.50. The same vendor had a pen of Suffolks at £101.50 and a fantastic run of mules for £69.50 and £67.50. A good show of Swales were forward topping at £45.50 from L Smith, Roachburn Farm Tindale Fell also purchased by Mr R Skelton. Many more could have been sold to vendor advantage.
