At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 11th March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A show of 368 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with a smaller show of 1496 cast and prime sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 258 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday, with all classes selling sharper on the week. Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of cows topped at 772kg, 169.5ppk or £1308 and to 778kg, 167.5ppk or £1303 to Limousin crosses purchased by Messrs Worsley and Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Lawson & Son, South Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 907kg, 137.5ppk or £1247 to Tom Holmes. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe run of Limousin cows topped at 770kg, 157.5ppk or £1212 to Messrs Worsley.

A good show of black and white cows were forward on Monday with all classes selling better on the week. Messrs Murchie, Guillands Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 872kg, 122.5ppk or £1068 to Les Fell. Messrs Watson & Son, Moorhouse Farm run of Holstein cross cows and heifers topped at 748kg, 140.5ppk or £1050 and to 650kg, 151.5ppk or £984 to Mr Sean McGimpsey and Mr Les Fell. Messrs Chappelhow, High Grounds sold a Holstein cross cow for 859kg, 120.5ppk or £1035 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Reed, Croft House sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 884kg, 112.5ppk or £994 to Mr Steven Bowes. Messrs Johnstone, Westray Farm sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow which sold for 833kg, 117.5ppk or £978 to Steven Bowes.

PRIME BULLS – A small entry of 65 prime bulls were forward, selling to 10-12 pence a kilo more for black and white, and continentals remaining a similar trade.
Top overall came from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan with their Charolais bull selling to £1720.62 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Limousin bulls topped at £1668.70 from Messrs Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth and to £1639.95 from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton. Beef Shorthorns peaked at £1427.55 from Messrs Dickie, Knockenjig, Sanquhar. Top overall pence per kilo of 225ppk was received by Messrs Annett, Widdrington Farm for a Limousin.
Black and whites peaked at £1266.17 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Marrs, Broomhills, Carlisle and to £1217.13from Messrs Raven, Durdar House, Carlisle. Both of which were purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Topping this section’s pence per kilo of 182.5ppk was Messrs Errington, Lowther Low Moor, Penrith, and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A good entry of 44 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling slightly easier on the week. Top overall came from Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton, whose quality consignment peaked at £1690.28 for an outstanding Limousin cross heifer, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendor sold another heifer to achieved top overall pence per kilo of 234.5ppk.
Steers sold to a top overall of £1669.57 from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, again purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo in the steer section came from DA Harrison, Hill House, selling their Limousin cross to 279.5ppk.

Prime Hoggs – The weekly sale of prime sheep had a sharp drop in numbers from last week, resulting in all classes being keenly bid for.
The sale topped at £118.80 for a fantastic Beltex cross lamb from Messrs Harrington, Sleightholme Farm, Newton Arlosh which was also the top price per kilo at 297ppk and sold to Mr A Dawson. Mr MA Pieri, Stone House sold a great run of hoggs to a top of £116.80 for a pen of four Beltex with and pen of twelve realising £112.80 from the same home, also topping the heavy section at £104.80.
Messrs Donaldson, York sold 250 well finished hoggs to a top of £116.80 for a pair of Beltex. Messrs Dempster, Castlehill sold a Beltex to 295.5ppk.
Hill sheep sold to £91 for a pen of Cheviot hoggs from Messrs Reid, Bengall and to 191.7ppk for Scotch Blackfaced from Smalmstown.
Mules sold to £87.30 for a pen from Mirkbooths and to 179.8ppk from Stone House.

Cast Ewes : A quality show of ewes were forward and were met by a dearer trade than in previous weeks, with all classes of ewes being £5-6 dearer.
Topping the sale was a Dutch Texel ewe from Messrs Mounsey, Laversdale selling to £117.50. A fantastic run of Texel ewes were forward from Messrs Horsley, Catterlen, averaging over £100.
Mules saw a good rise, with a pen of 23 from Kirtleton House selling to £71.50 to Mr Skelton. Hill sheep were in good demand with Swaledale ewes being bid to £44.50 for a pen consigned by Messrs Morton, Penrith.
More numbers are required every week to satisfy demand.
