At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 18th March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A large show of 495 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with a similar show of 1437 cast and prime sheep.
Also held this day was the annual show and sale of Primestock cattle on behalf of the North West Limousin and Border Blue Club, which was expertly judge by Mr Mike Harrison, RJ Harrison Butchers, Wigton.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 302 cast cows and stock bulls were forward.
Maulscastle Farms run of cows topped at 951kg, 173.5ppk or £1649 and to 790kg, 175.5ppk or £1386 both purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Corrie, Stonebyres Mains sold a British Blue cow for 895kg, 183.5ppk or £1642 and to 986kg, 163.5ppk or £1612 also to Mr Kirkpatrick.
South Road Farm, Aberdeen run of cows topped at 1190kg, 136.5ppk or £1624 for an Aberdeen Angus cow and to 1047kg, 140.5ppk or £1471 for a Charolais cow both again to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm, Barnard Castle run of cows topped at 688kg, 199.5ppk or £1372 to Mr Les Fell and 653kg, 199.5ppk or £1302 and 642kg, 199.5ppk or £1280 both to Mr Kirkpatrick. Maulscastle Farms sold the top priced Limousin cow, which sold for 843kg, 159.5ppk or £1344 to Messrs Worsley. Messrs Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth sold a Limousin cow for 806kg, 166.5ppk or £1341 to Mr Kirkpatrick.
In the show section, leading the Limousin cow class was Messrs Barclay, Aberdeen with his tremendous pedigree bred cow, sired by Wilodge Vantastic, selling for 921kg, 144.5ppk or £1330.82 to Messrs Worsley. In a strong class of British Blue cows, Messrs A & CS Comrie, Stonebyres took the top spot with an excellent pedigree bred cow sired by Ballygrange Alex. She weighed 921kg and sold for 144.5ppk or £1330.85 and was purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.
A good show of black and white cows were on offer, with all classes being 5-10p up on the week, with ‘P’ Grade cows selling for 96ppk.
Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold two outstanding Holstein cross cows for 891kg, 128.5ppk or £1144 purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick and to 718kg, 143.5ppk or £1030, purchased by Me Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of Holstein cross cows and heifers topped at 776kg, 138.5ppk or £1074 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Rogerson, Wardpark sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 730kg, 143.5ppk or £1047 to Wesley Gracey. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 953kg, 109.5ppk or £1043 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Irving, Bectonhall sold a Holstein cross cows for 875kg, 114.5ppk or £1001 to Mr Fell.

PRIME BULLS – An enormous entry of 137 prime bulls forward with all classes selling at a similar rate to that of last week. Top overall out with the show was a superb Simmental bull from Messrs Lowry, New Steadings, Lanark who received £1655 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Limousins sold to £1621 from Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Aberdeen Angus crosses sold to £1502 from Moss-side Farms and British Blues sold to £1433 from Messrs Pinguey, Ellerton Grange, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 217.5p was attained by South Road Farm for a Limousin and purchased by Geoff Nutter.
In the show section, 1st prize Limousin bull was awarded to Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton. Their bull achieved a day’s overall top of £1683 or 217.5ppk and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Taking 1st prize British Blue bull was Messrs Hill & Devine, Hill End Farm, Biggar and later sold for £1442 to achieve the top overall pence per kilo of 234.5p. PRIME CATTLE – A good entry of 56 prime steers and heifers forward. Trade remained similar to that of last week, firm and pleasing. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie achieving £1555 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and top priced heifer came from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow Farm, Carlisle receiving £1508 again purchased by Pioneer Foods.
The Limousin Championship rosette was won by Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Kirklinton with his 1st prize, black Limousin cross heifer which was sired by a Gunnerfleet bred bull. She weighed 608kg and sold for, 241.5ppk or £1468.32 and was purchased by the judge Mike Harrison, RJ Harrison Butchers, Wigton. Mr Story, also won Reserve Champion, with the 2nd prize black heifer, this time sired by a Glenrock bred bull. She sold for 238.5ppk, £1440.54 and weighed 604kg. She was knocked down to Pioneer Foods Carlisle.
Winning the British Blue Champion rosette was the first prize heifer, consigned by Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream. This black heifer was sired by Betws Elliot, weighted 662kg, and sold to 219.5ppk or £1453.09 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Taking Reserve was the first prize steer, from Messrs N Dixon, Low Whinnow Farm, Thursby. This black bullock sold for 682kg, 200.5ppk, £1503.81and was knocked down to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.
Out with the show top overall pence per kilo of 245.5p was achieved by Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow and purchased by Stephen Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill.

Prime Hoggs – The weekly sale of prime hoggs drew similar numbers to last week, although a far smaller number of best export types were forward, trade improved dramatically for all classes.
The sale topped at £111.80 for two pens of Beltex hoggs from Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall, both selling to Mr G Lomax. Topping the pence per kilo was 264.3ppk, which was paid for a pen of Beltex hoggs from Messrs Corrie, Shank Castle, again selling to Mr Lomax.
Hill sheep sold to £91.80 for Cheviots from Messrs Reid, Bengall, and to 200.7ppk for two pens of Scotch Blackfaced hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown.
Mules sold to £85 from Smalmstown and to 180.7ppk from Messrs Fisher, Reaygarth.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A smaller show of cast sheep were on offer, however trade was sharper on the week.
Topping the sale was a Texel ewe from Messrs Reid, Lockerbie, selling for £110.50 to Mr Robert Skelton. Mules were once again in strong demand, with a pen of 15 from Kirtleton House selling to £76.50 also to Mr Skelton. Swaledales topped at £45.50 from Messrs Kerr, Roadhead.
More numbers of all classes are needed to satisfy demand.
