At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 1st April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again a good show of 312 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 1336 cast and prime sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A small show of 187 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with extra buyers coming forward for cows, ensuring all classes selling sharper on the week.
Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm run of Limousin cows topped at 880kg, 166.5ppk or £1465 and to 781kg, 180.5ppk or £1409 both purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold a Limousin cross cows for 873kg, 160.5ppk or £1401 and was purchased by Mr Malcolm Allan, and a Limousin heifer sold to 189.5ppk to Jewitts. Messrs Mair, Meikleholm Farm run of cows topped at 839kg, 146.5ppk or £1229 also to Malcolm Allan. Messrs Milburn, Wall End Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 751kg, 155.5ppk or £1167 to Messrs Worsley. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cow for 798kg, 145.5ppk or £1161 to Mr Steven Bowes.
A good show of black and white cows were on offer with trade being up by 5-8p on the week. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head run of Holstein cross cows topped at 905kg, 125.5ppk or £1135. Messrs Rogerson & Son, Wardpark sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 904kg, 121.5ppk or £1098. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower run of Holstein cross cows topped at 861kg, 125.5ppk or £1080 to Mr Bowes, and to 895kg, 118.5ppk or £1060 again to Mr Bowes and to 813kg, 129.5ppk or £1052 to Les Fell. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein cross heifer for 880kg, 121.5ppk or £1069. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 856kg, 124.5ppk or £1065 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow run of Holstein cross cows topped at 885kg, 119.5ppk or £1057 and to 794kg, 128.5ppk or £1020 purchase by Mr Bowes. Messrs Harrison, Low House Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 795kg, 128.5ppk or £1021. Messrs Bulman & Son, Bank House sold a British Friesian cow for 799kg, 127.5ppk or £1018. Messrs Donald & Son, Lamonby Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 854kg, 118.5ppk or £1011.
A small offering of only 4 stock bulls were forward, with Messrs Macintyre, Downan Farm selling a Limousin for 920kg, 158.5ppk or £1458 to Mr Malcolm Allan. Mr Craggs, Glower Oer Him Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 910kg, 148.5ppk or £1351 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Rudd & Sons, Grassing sold an Aberdeen Angus bull for 1263kg, 106.5ppk or £1341 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

PRIME BULLS – Another good show of 87 prime bulls were forward, with trade sharper on the week. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Morpeth receiving £1836.42 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. British Blues sold to £1611.13 from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle, and Simmentals sold to £1524.82 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.
Top overall pence per kilo of 235.5ppk was attained by Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall for a Limousin cross purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir. The same vendor also sold a British Blue cross to 234.5ppk and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.
Black and whites were seen to peak at £1329.16 for a British Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie purchased by Ralph Pearson. The same vendor also sold top pence per kilo of 178.5ppk and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A very good quality show of 38 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling to a day’s top of £1636.14 for a Blonde cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousin crosses sold to £1601.28 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie again to Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 219.5ppk was received by Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle for a Limousin cross.
Heifers peaked at £1540 again from Messrs Wilson, Petteril, this time purchased by Messrs Foster. British Blues sold to £1465 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and was purchased by Les Fell. Charolais to £1431.05 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 231.5ppk was attained by Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Alan Jarvis on behalf of a butcher.

Prime Hoggs – On Monday Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime hoggs. All classes took a sharp rise on the week to average 200p overall (215p SQQ) which equates to £93.18 (+£6.48). The sale topped at £123.80 for a fantastic pen of Beltex from Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall which sold to Mr A Dawson. Messrs Batty also sold two further lots of Beltex to 304.5ppk to top that section all selling to Mr A Dawson. Suffolk hoggs averaged £94.38 and sold to £100 for a pen of 9 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 201.9p from Messrs Lawson, Roe Farm. Cheviot hoggs averaged £95.85 and sold to £99.30 from Messrs Whitfield, Woodhouses and to 216p from Messrs Wilson, Woodside. Scotch Blackface hoggs averaged £89.84 and sold to £98.80 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 215.6p from Messrs Wilson, Woodside.
