Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 8th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again a good show of 360 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 2055 cast and prime sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A larger show of 207 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with trade being as dear as ever.

Messrs Priestley, Cracrop sold a Limousin cow for 878kg at 147.5p totalling £1295 bought by Messrs Worsley; Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside run of Limousin cows topped at 821kg at 157.5p totalling £1293 and 787kg at 151.5p totalling £1192 bought by Messrs Worsley and Messrs Roberts, Wales.  Messrs Hodge, The Grove sold a young Charolais cross cow for 666kg at 175.5p totalling £1168 bought by Jewitts. Messrs Prudham, Whitefield sold a Limousin cross heifer for 622kg at 184.5p totalling £1147 to Sean McGimpsey while Messrs Hodge also sold a British Blue cross cow for 688kg at 163.5p totalling £1124 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate Farm sold the top priced Simmental cross cow which sold for 661kg at 163.5p totalling £1080 to Sean McGimpsey.

A good show of black and white cows were forward with all classes being in great demand.  Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow run of well fleshed cows topped at 839kg at 138.5p totalling £1162 for a Fleckvieh cross and a Holstein cross for 830kg at 131.5p totalling £1091 and 899kg at 117.8p totalling  £1056 with Friesian cows from the same home selling for 830kg at 125.5p totalling £1041 and 796kg at 129.5p totalling £1030.  Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein cross cow for 857kg at 132.5p totalling £1135, Messrs Brough & Son, Bolton Cottage Holstein cross cows topped at 895kg at 114.5p totalling £1024.  Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein cross cow for 807kg at 125.5p totalling £1012 and Messrs Threlkeld, Baileytown’s run of Holstein cross cows topped at 829kg at 121.5p totalling £1007.  Messrs Workman, The Beeches sold Montbeliarde cross heifers for 154.5p, 138.5p and 136.5p, Messrs Martin, Boggle Hall sold the top price Friesian heifer for 143.5p and Messrs Johnston, Cote House sold a Holstein cross heifer for 135.5p.

Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow sold the top price Charolais stock bull for 993kg at 137.5p totalling £1365 and Messrs Horsley, Woodhouse sold a Hereford stock bull for 979kg at 136.5p totalling £1336.

PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 112 prime bulls but quality down on the week. A good trade was achieved for all sorts. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton achieving £1546 purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Blonde crosses sold to £1432 from Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot Farm, Canonbie and Simmentals to £1397 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie. Top pence per kilo of 226.5p was achieved by Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot for a Limousin cross. Black and whites peaked at £1289 from Seymour Farms, Leegate, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor this same bull was top pence per kilo of 184.5p.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger entry of 57 prime steers and heifers forward on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria achieving £1609 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 239.5p was another Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and again purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blues sold to 229.5p from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream purchased by Honeywell Meats, Preston. Blonde crosses from the same home peaked at 224.5p again purchased by Honeywells. Steers peaked at £1575 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie for a Limousin and Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle sold another to £1563 and top pence per kilo of 221.5p was a Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle purchased by Messrs Medcalf of Halifax.

Prime Sheep – On Monday 8th April 2019 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw a larger show of 1930 forward along with 125 cast sheep.

The first new season lambs met with a good demand throughout to average £114.62 per head or 272 pence per kilo.  This section topped at £123 for a pen of 5 Texel x lambs from James Bailey, Ivanhoe Livestock Partnership, Wyvill Grange Farm which sold to Mr A Dawson.  Top pence per kilo was 298.7p again for a pen of 5 Texel x lambs from Messrs Bailey which sold to Mr R Skelton.

Prime hoggs met a firm enquiry for all classes with some excellent results throughout with an overall average of £96.68, 204.3ppk achieved; SQQ average 222.54p.  This section was topped by Messrs CR & CL Donaldson, Hazel House, York who sold a great pen of 3 Texel x lambs at £124.80 to Mr R Skelton.  Topping pence per kilo was an outstanding pen of 4 Beltex hoggs at 298.8p to Mr G Lomax.  Mule hoggs sold to a top of £101.80 for heavies from Messrs PT & J Inman, Kilnknowe, Lockerbie and to 208.3ppk for a pen of 30 from A & D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Distington.  Hill hoggs sold to £98.80 for a pen of 20 Scotch Blackface from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown to McIntyre Meats, Leyburn and to 223.6ppk for a pen of 25 to Mr G Lomax.

Many more hoggs are required and can be sold with ease for all weights and grades.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A good show of ewes forward with leaner sorts of sheep being dearer on the week.  Topping the sale was a Beltex Ram from Messrs Campbell, Stranraer selling for £102.50 to Mr Bell, Lockerbie.  Mules were once again a fantastic trade with a top price coming from Mr Wills, Wigton achieving £79.50.  Blackfaced sheep topped at £68 from Messrs Dixon, Newcastle.
