Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 15th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again a good show of 427 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 1996 cast and prime sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – Messrs Maudsley, Littlebank sold two pure British Blue cows for 830kg, 199.5ppk or £1655 and to 827kg, 199.5ppk or £1649. Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 1108kg, 138.5ppk or £1534.Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm sold an outstanding Limousin cross cow for 807kg, 186.5ppk or £1505. Messrs Cleasby, Linden House sold a pure Limousin cow for 799kg, 158.5ppk or £1266. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold a Limousin cow for 732kg, 171.5ppk or £1255.Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall run of cows topped at 786kg, 159.5ppk or £1253 and to 650kg, 191.5ppk or £1244 and to 726kg, 169.5ppk or £1230 all for Limousin crosses.

A good show of black and white cows were forward with Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of Holstein cross cows topping at 942kg, 126.5ppk or £1191. Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow run of Holstein cross cows topped at 979kg, 116.5ppk or £1140 and to 910kg, 123.5ppk or £1123. Messrs Hodgson & Partners, Holmes Mill Holstein cross cows topped at 860kg, 129.5ppk or £1113. Messrs Workman, The Beeches sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 682kg, 161.5ppk or £1101. Messrs Hetherington & Sons, Blue Dial sold a run of Holstein cross cows, topping at 828kg, 130.5ppk or £1080. Blencogo House Farms sold Holstein cross cows to 851kg, 126.5ppk or £1076. Messrs Brown, Seaville Cote sold a Holstein cross cow for 770kg, 139.5ppk or £1074. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown run of Holstein cross cows topped at 798kg, 130.5ppk or £1041. Messrs Elliott, Brackenhow sold a Holstein cross cow for 807kg, 128.5ppk or £1037. Messrs Jefferson, High Pow sold a Holstein cross cow for 834kg, 122.5ppk or £1021. Messrs Gray, Drumtall Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 685kg, 147.5ppk or £1010. Messrs Ewbank, Tarnhall sold a Holstein cross cow for 794kg, 126.5ppk or £1004.

A larger show of 13 stock bulls were forward, with Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow selling the top priced Limousin stock bull which sold for 1082kg, 164.5ppk or £1779.Messrs Gibb & Sons, Eachwick Red House sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus Bull which sold for 1284kg, 123.5ppk or £1585.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller entry of 72 prime bulls were forward, whereby quality and trade was up on the week, seeing a day’s top overall of £1702.89 for a British Blue from Messrs Maudsley, Littlebank Bungalow, Settle and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Others sold to £1700.31 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton. Limousins sold to £1650.73 from Messrs Mitchinson, Gallowberry, Brampton and Charolais sold to £1374.56 from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith.

Top overall pence per kilo of 238.5ppk was attained twice, firstly by Messrs Maudsley for the aforementioned British Blue and secondly by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton. The same vendor also topped Limousin crosses at 229.5ppk and was purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir.

Black and whited peaked at £1131.30 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Gott, Prospect House, Cockermouth and top pence per kilo of 178.5ppk for another from Messrs Dixon, East Farm, Stocksfield.

Many more could have been easily sold.

PRIME CATTLE – Yet another very good show of 57 prime steers and heifers were forward with all classes being dearer on the week.  Top overall came from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith who received £1703.24 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Harrignton, Hosket Hill, Carlisle sold a Simmental crosses sold to £1627.50 again to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Bazadaise crosses sold to £1453.73 from Messrs Robinson, Gelt Hall Farm and was purchased by Mr Les Fell, Settle. Top pence per kilo was a Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton receiving 238.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis.

Heifers were exceptionally easily sold and topped at £1636.64 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1526.75 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Blondes sold to £1353.04 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle, purchased by Mr David Whaite.

Top pence per kilo of 243.5ppk was received by Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm for the aforementioned British Blue cross. Followed by another British Blue selling to 240.5ppk, this time consigned by Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle. Limousins sold to 2345ppk from Messrs Brought, Old Rectory, purchased by Messrs Mathers, Kelso and Blondes to 230.5ppk from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle and was purchased by Mr David Whaite, Blackpool.

PRIME SHEEP– The weekly sale of Prime & cast sheep, had an increased number for all classes forward, with plenty demand from all outlets.

Prime Lambs – A smaller show of 22 Spring lambs sold to a top of £131.80 for a fantastic Texel cross lamb from I & H Hornsby, The Stackyard, Wigton and to 300ppk for a pen of four from Messrs M & JI Slater, Rose Cottage, Beckermet , both lots being purchased by Mr A Dawson.  The Spring lambs averaged £118.46 a head.

Prime Hoggs- Prime Hogg numbers remained consistent on the week with 1861 head forward, a mixed show was on offer, however all classes were keenly bid for.  Hoggs topped at £130 for a pen of four exceptional Beltex hoggs consigned by JP Mason & Sons, East Farm, Langton, Malton purchased by Mr R Skelton.  Beltex lambs also topped per kilo at 300.7ppk for a pen of three from JC & SE Little, The Guards, Ireby to Messrs Haigh, Hexham, and to 300p for Beltex from Master Freddie Little, The Guards.  Messrs Little’s run of Beltex averaged £117.56 per head.

Hill bred hoggs sold to £98 for a great run of Scotch Blackfaced from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown which were also top pence per kilo at 220.2ppk and purchased by the Blackface Meat Company, Dumfries.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A good show of cast ewes were forward and hill bred sheep were in high demand, with Swaledale ewes selling to £54.50. An excellent run of Beltex and Texel ewes from Messrs Musgrave sold well averaging £98.39 and topping at £108.50.

More ewes could have been sold to vendor’s advantage.
