Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 22nd April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller of 252 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 837 cast and prime sheep were forward at the Easter Bank Holiday Sale.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good entry of 172 cast cows were forward with an entry of mainly black and white cows being forward, but buyers being keen for all classes resulting in a much sharper trade.

Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 948kg, 124.5ppk or £1180 and to 782kg, 141.5ppk or £1106. Messrs McMiken, Upper Barr run of Holstein cross cows topped at 914kg, 125.5ppk or £1147 and to 836kg, 128.5ppk or £1074. Messrs Wilson, Old Church Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 873kg, 129.5ppk or £1130. Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 900kg, 125.5ppk or £1129. Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 826kg, 135.5ppk or £1119. Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 804kg, 137.5ppk or £1105. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Down Hall Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 757kg, 144.5ppk or £1093. Messrs Rogerson & Son, Ward Park sold a Holstein cross cow for 900kg, 120.5ppk or £1084. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold a British Friesian cow for 774kg, 136.5ppk or £1056.

Messrs Corcoran, Viewfield Farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for 855kg, 148.5ppk or £1269. Messrs Cowx & Son, Town End Farm sold a Simmental cows for 866kg, 143.5ppk or £1242.

Messrs Moscrop & Waugh sold the top priced Limousin stock bull which sold for 1077kg, 123.5ppk or £1330. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced British Friesian stock bull for 1075kg, 111.5ppk or £1198.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller entry of 56 prime bulls selling for sharper on the week at Easter Monday’s sale. Top overall was a Limousin bull from Messrs Common, Crossdykes Farm, Lockerbie achieving £1091 and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Charolais sold to £1611 from Messrs Wood, Waters Farm, Penrith. Top pence per kilo overall was 211.5p from Messrs Brown, Willows, Workington purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Black and whites were forward in good quality and peaked at £1228 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armour, Milton, Moffat purchased by Jewitt Meats and top pence per kilo of 186.5p was attained by Messrs Thompson, Gates Garth Hall, Maryport for a Holstein Friesian. PRIME CATTLE – A quieter day od only 26 prime steers and heifers forward selling very well for the quality forward. Overall top was £1616 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton. Top pence per kilo of 222.5p was received by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle for a Limousin cross. Heifers saw a days top of £1595 from Messrs Pearson, Plasket Lands Farm, Maryport and top pence per kilo of 219.5p was achieved for the same animal all of the above purchased by Pioneer Foods.

PRIME SHEEP–  Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly prime sheep sale on Monday which saw a combination of the bank holiday and beautiful weather hit hogg numbers dramatically however all classes sold well.

Prime Lambs: The spring lambs met a great trade to top at £126 for a fantastic pair of Texels from Messrs Hornsby, The Stackyard, Westnewton and to 303.8p for a pen of 4 from the same home with both lots selling to Mr A Dawson.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A strong entry of 175 quality ewes were forward and were met by a good trade. Demand for fleshy ewes was up on the week and topped at £130 for two cracking Beltex ewes from Messrs Fitzsimon, Sunnyhill. Horned ewes continued to be great to sell, and peaked at £66.50 for four Blackfaced ewes from Messrs Armstrong, Lanehead Farm, and Swaledales up to £63.50 for a pen of ten from Messrs Huddleston, Round Meadows Farm.
