Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 276 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with a good ringside of buyers ensuring a flying trade. Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank Farm sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 855kg, 175.5ppk or £1500. Messrs Park, Cowranside Farm sold a Limousin cow for 865kg, 168.5ppk or £1457. Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm sold the top priced Blonde cow for 860kg, 158.5ppk or £1363. Messrs Dodd, Tundergarth Mains sold a Limousin cow for 749kg, 176.5ppk or £1321. Messrs Cowx, Hudscales sold a Limousin cow for 745kg, 176.5ppk or £1314. Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill run of Blonde cows topped at 722kg, 186.5ppk or £1303. A good show of black and white cows were forward with trade being good throughout. Messrs Murchie & Son, Hawkshole sold a Holstein cross cow for 880kg, 129.5ppk or £1139. PRIME BULLS – Yet another large entry of 110 prime bulls forward selling at a lesser trade to that of last week with only the fleshiest easier to sell. Top overall was £1745 for a Limousin from Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Charolais crosses sold to £1454 from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton. Aberdeen Angus’ sold to £1384 from Messrs Graham, Birsca, Lockerbie and British Blues to £1368 from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton. Top overall pence per kilo of 226.5p was achieved by Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan for a British Blue cross and purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

PRIME CATTLE – A tremendous show of 84 prime steers and heifers were forward, with all classes a similar trade on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton who received £1677.65 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1502.12 from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle and purchased by Les Fell. Top pence per kilo of 222.5p was received by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks.
Heifers were once again forward in good numbers with new vendors in attendance. Top overall was £1522 for a British Blue cross from Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousins sold to £1520 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle. Blonde crosses sold to £1474 from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Top overall pence per kilo of 234.5p was attained by Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont for a Limousin and purchased by David Whaite. Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle sold another to 233.5p purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers. Charolais crosses sold to 216.5p from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton and purchased by David Whaite.

PRIME SHEEP– On Monday Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which attracted an entry of 808 prime sheep and 170 cast ewes.
Prime Lambs: Prime lambs came forward in larger droves this week to average 239.43p which is 20p above many outlets trading today. Topping the trade at £122.80 was a fantastic Texel x lamb shown by JJ & CE Palmer, Greensyke, Lamplugh which was purchased by Mr A Dawson. Top pence per kilo was 303.9p for an outstanding pen of 7 Texel x lambs from WL Musgrave & Sons, Cardew Hall which sold to Mr M Helliwell. Suffolks sold to £119.50 (277.9p) from DW Musgrave, Sowerby Wood, Carlisle.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A large quality show was present and was met with an increased demand. Topping the sale was an excellent Texel ewe from Messrs Reay & Son, Maften selling for £131.50. Messrs Bennison, Lazonby sold a tremendous Beltex ewe for £105.50.
Hill sheep were well sought after, selling to £98.50 for a pen from Messrs Booton, Dumfries. Swaledale sheep sold to £57.50 from Messrs Brough, Chapel House.
With a growing ringside of buyers, more cast ewes are required to satisfy demand.
