Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 27th May, Harrison & Hetherington held sale of Primestock. A smaller show of cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and cast and prime sheep were forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller entry of cast cows and bull were forward on Bank Holliday Monday, where all classes would sell slightly less on the week.

Top overall was a tremendous Charolais from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Annan who received £1400.15 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Limousins sold to £1281.39 from Messrs Robinson, Bog Hall, Newcastle, who also attained the top pence per kilo of 181.5ppk for the same animal.

Black and White cows peaked at £991.85 from Messrs Henderson, Park House, Carlisle and to a top pence per kilo of 134.5ppk from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller entry of 61 prime bulls sold to a similar trade to that of last week. Top overall was a British Blue from Messrs Oxley, Barholm Mains, Newton Stewart who achieved £1667.88 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Limousins sold to £1630.98 from Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie. Top pence per kilo of 209.5ppk was attained by Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries.

Black and Whites were easier to sell than the better quality continental sorts, seeing a day’s top of £1132.26 from Messrs Hewitson, King Hill, Brampton and to a top pence per kilo of 172.5ppk from Messrs Preston, Wedholme, Wigton both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 34 prime steers and heifers were forward with a good trade being achieved for all classes.

Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle who achieved £1566.95 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses sold to £1537.21 from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport with the same vendor selling the top priced Charolais cross to £1530.39. Topping the pence per kilo at 221.5ppk again from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House.

Heifers were once again good to sell, and topped at £1505.82 for a Limousin cross from Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. The same vendor also sold the top priced British Blue cross to £1460.87. Top overall pence per kilo of 238.5ppk was attained twice both by consigned by Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport and was purchased by Mr David Whaite.

PRIME SHEEP– On Monday Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which attracted a great entry of 1449 head.

Prime Lambs: Spring lamb numbers continue to grow with 687 forward this week again meeting a great demand to average 235ppk (SQQ 238ppk) or £98.52 per head. The sale topped at £121.80 for a pen of 3 Texel lambs from Miss S Ritson, Uldale which sold to Mr A Dawson. Miss Ritson sold 27 lambs to average £115.96. Top price per kilo was 300p for 35kg Texel x lambs from Messrs Hennessy, Orton Rigg, Great Orton. Many more needed to satisfy demand with no less than 66 pens of lambs at £100 or more.

Prime Hoggs: Again a good show of hoggs forward which sold to £97 for a pen of Texel x hoggs from Letterkenny Road, Ireland to Mr R Skelton and to 205.1ppk for Beltex from JT & EM Marrs & Son, Broomhills to Mr R Skelton with the hoggs averaging £85.45 a head.

Cast Ewes and Rams: Another tremendous entry were met with an outstanding trade throughout.

Topping the sale was a pen of Texel ewes from Mr J Hudson, Ivegill selling for £128.50 to Mr R Skelton.  Suffolks were in strong demand with a pen of ewes selling from Messrs Irving, Beaumont for £106.50 to Mr Skelton.  A good show of Mules were forward with the leading price coming from Messrs Mitchell, Raughton Head at £77.50 and selling to Mr Halliwell, Rochdale.  Hill bred ewes were again a strong trade achieving a top price of £75 for a pen of Blackfaced ewes shown by Messrs Browell, Hexham and sold to Mr Lomax, Milnthorpe.
