At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 3rd June, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 502 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and cast and prime sheep were forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 332 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with a large ring side of buyers ensuring a sharper trade. Mr David Holliday, Rashfield sold an outstanding Charolais cow for 954kg at 167.5p which came to a total of £1597. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of Limousin cows topped at 874kg at 166.5p which came to a total of £1455. Mr David Airey, The Close sold a Limousin cross cow for 735kg at 186.5 p which came to a total of £1370. Messrs Birkbeck, Danotty Hall’s run of cows topped at 769kg at 176.5p which came to a total of £1357. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold a Limousin cross heifer for 181.5ppk. Mr David Airey, The Close sold a Limousin cross heifer for 179.5ppk.
A mixed show of black and whites were forward with all classes being a good trade. Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold two Holstein cross cows for 856kg at 125.5ppk which came to a total of £1074, and 846kg at 122.5ppk which came to a total of £1036. Messrs Gorst, Low Wood sold the top priced Swedish Red for 838kg at 126.5ppk which came to a total of £1060. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm’s run of Holstein cross cows topped at 858kg at 123.5ppk which came to a total of £1059 and 801kg at 125.5ppk which came to a total of £1005. Messrs Burne, High Barn sold a Holstein cross cow for 851kg at 123.5ppk which came to a total of £1050. Messrs Dickinson, High House sold a Friesian cow for 823kg at 125.5ppk which came to a total of £1032, also Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 889kg at 112.5ppk which came to a total of £1000.

A large show of 13 stock bulls were forward with quality bulls in demand.
Messrs Sparke & Sons, Little Swinburne sold a Limousin stock bull for 982kg at 152.5p which came to a total of £1497. Messrs Scott Bleabank Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1087kg at 133.5p which came to a total of £1451.

PRIME BULLS – A much larger entry of 109 prime bulls forward with trade very steady on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie receiving £1388 and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blues sold to £1382 from the same home and purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Yorkshire. Simmentals sold to £1324 from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton and bought by Ralph Pearson.
Top overall pence per kilo of 219.5p was achieved by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for a Limousin cross purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir. Black and whites peaked at £1166 from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. The same vendors also sold top pence per kilo of 171.5p for another also purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger and very good entry of 63 prime steers and heifers forward saw trade slightly less on the week but in line with the national trend. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle achieving £1574 and purchased by Pioneer Foods Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm sold the top price British Blue for £1567 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais crosses sold to £1514 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and purchased by Alan Jarvis. Top pence per kilo of 221.5p was achieved by Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas and purchased by Pioneer Foods.
Heifers topped at £1535 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais crosses sold to £1520 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm. Top overall pence per kilo of 242.5p was achieved for a British Blue cross from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and 241.5p was attained by Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton for a Limousin also purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME SHEEP– On Monday Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which drew a great entry of 1201 spring lambs and 350 cast sheep.
Spring lambs met a great enquiry with 70 pens achieving £100 and beyond. These topped at £134 for a truly outstanding Beltex x lamb from WL Musgrave, Cardew Hall which was also top price per kilo at 319p and sold to Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Musgrave’s run of 36 lambs averaged 271.68p (£109.97 a head). More lambs could have easily been sold to vendor’s advantage with all weights and grades keenly bid for.
Ewes proved harder to cash. Plainer ewes were good to sell however these topped at £104 for Texels from TW & M Bird, Ghyll House.
