At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 10th June, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good show of 420 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 1154 cast and prime sheep were forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 282 cast cows were forward on Monday at Carlisle with trade for good quality cows being as dear as last week, but other cows would be less money.
Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House Farm’s run of outstanding cows topped at 859kg, 174.5ppk or £1498 for a Bazadaise and to 854kg, 171.5ppk or £1464 for a Limousin cross and to 801kg, 164.5ppk or £1317 for a British Blue cross. Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall’s run of Limousin cross cows topped at 771kg, 186.5ppk or £1437. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm’s run of Limousin cows topped at 775kg, 185.5ppk or £1437. Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill’s run of Blonde cross cows topped at 815kg, 173.5ppk or £1414. Mr Paul Stobart, The Square sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 727kg, 176.5ppk or £1283.
A good show of black and white cows was on offer, with trade being less for all classes. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold the top priced Holstein cross heifer for 703kg, 149.5ppk or £1050. Messrs Johnston, Cote House sold a Holstein cross for 799kg, 123.5ppk or £986. Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 922kg, 105.5ppk or £972. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm’s run of Holstein cross cows topped at 693kg, 139.5ppk or £966. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cows for 651kg, 148.5ppk or £966.

Shankbridge End Farm sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1245kg, 117.5ppk or £1462. Messrs Raven, Crookdake Hall sold a Limousin stock bull for 1119kg, 129.5ppk or £1449. Messrs Oliver, Cawfields sold a Limousin stock bull for 961kg, 145.5ppk or £1398.

PRIME BULLS: Another large entry of 96 prime bulls were forward, with all classes similar trade to that of last week’s. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle who was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie, with Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie selling another to £1511.13. Top pence per kilo of 201.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan for a Limousin.
Black and whites topped at £1149.54 from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle, the same home sold the top price per kilo of 178.5ppk and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A good entry of 49 prime steers and heifers forward with a good trade achieved and 10 active buyers around the ring. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie who attained £1645 and £1620 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 221.5p was received by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle purchased by King Street Butchers.
Heifers were very easily sold and peaked at £1562 for Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith sold another to £1524 purchased by Maurice Wharton, Blackbrow Abbattoir, Wigton. British Blue crosses sold to £1413 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill also purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir. Top overall pence per kilo of 230.5p was paid to Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth and purchased by David Whaite. More lightweight heifers required on a weekly basis for an ever growing demand of family Butchers and Wholesalers.

PRIME SHEEP– On Monday Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which attracted another strong show of 1154 head despite several vendors rightly prioritising crop gathering.
An overall average of 223.7p shows a remarkable return being 10-15p ahead of other outlets. The sale saw a top price of £125.80 for an exceptional Dutch Texel x lamb from Messrs Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton and sold to Morgan Helliwell. Topping per kilo for the second week running with a fabulous Beltex was WL Musgrave & Sons, Cardew Hall, Dalston, this lamb sold for 304.5p (40kg £121.80) to Mr A Dawson. More new vendors this week with one of these, Messrs Wilson, Meadow Farm, Camerton selling Texel lambs to £124.80 and averaging £112.16. Another new vendor Messrs Harrison, Baggrow sold a beautiful pair of Dutch Texel x lambs to £115.80 (279ppk). In total 67 pens of lambs sold at £100 and beyond.

A smaller show of cast ewes forward with trade being up on the week. Topping the sale was a pen of Texel ewes from E & SM Noble, Beckermet selling for £113.50 to Mr Lomax, Milnthorpe. Swaledale ewes topped at £54.50 from Mr J Murray, Langley on Tyne to Mr R Skelton. Mules were again a good price with leaner sorts being dearest trade. Top price came from Messrs Noble, Beckermet for £67.50 again to Mr Lomax. More ewes needed to satisfy demand.
