At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 17th June, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock with a good show of 350 cast cows, bulls and Prime cattle forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 210 cast cows and stock bulls were forward to an increased number of buyers. Messrs Errington, Beck House Farm sold the top priced Blue cow for 912kg, 162.5p £1482. Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm, sold two Holstein x Bullocks for 792kg, 150.5p £1191 and 799kg 146.5p, £1170. Messrs Brass, Bridge End Farm sold a Limousin cow for 758kg, 151.5p £1148 and 696kg, 164.5p £1144. Messrs Goldie, Greenfield sold the top priced Charolais cow for 826kg, 137.5p £1135. Messrs Hewson, Jerriestown sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 727kg, 146.5p £1065. Messrs Morris, Greengate House sold a Holstein x heifer for 599kg, 174.5p £1045. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold two Holstein x cows for 808kg, 119.5p £965 and 826 kg, 114.5p £945. Messrs Millar & Son, Woodhousehill sold a Holstein x cow for 795kg, 117.5p £934. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 930kg 99.5p £925. The top priced Friesian cow was consigned by Messrs Marrs & Sons, Croft Farm at 773 kg, 119.5p £923. Messrs Addison, Greystone House sold a Montbelairde x heifer for 619kg, 145.5p £900.
A larger show of 13 Stock bulls were forward, Messrs Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm sold the top priced Limousin Stock bull for 1186kg, 149.5 £1773. Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh sold a Limousin stock bull for 1035kg 149.5, £1547. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold a Limousin stock bull for 1055 kg 146.5, £1545. Messrs Story, Blackrigg sold a Limousin stock bull for 1083kg, 139.5, £1510. Messrs Bell & Son, Holmewrangle Farm sold the top pence per kg Limousin Stock bull for 939kg, 152.5p, £1431.

Top price per kilo of 202.5p from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle for a Limousin cross purchased by Geoff Nutter. PRIME CATTLE – A larger entry of 80 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes seeing a nice steady trade with best sorts a better trade throughout. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme. Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle peaking at £1644.58 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle also sold a Limousin steer reaching £1635.60, together with a British Blue cross steer selling for £1556.26.
The top price pence per kilo was 222.5p for a Limousin cross steer attained by Messrs Story, Newbigging, Carlisle and purchased by Pioneer Foods.
A very good show of heifers were forward and heading up the prices at £1499.74 was a Limousin cross shown by Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by M Wharton, Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton. The same vendors sold another to £1493.74 and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill. Finally the top price per kilo was 229.5p paid to Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport for a Limousin and purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool.

PRIME SHEEP– At the weekly sale 1113 prime lambs were forward with another pleasing number for the time of year with several vendors missing due to crop commitments. An overall average of 220p was achieved, which shows a great return, despite less best end export types being forward. The sale saw a top price of £116 achieved on two occasions both for heavy lambs shown by Messrs JJ & E Dobson, West End Farm, Allonby and Messrs JA & D Kirkby, Ashley Grove Farm, Egremont with both lots selling to Glen Lomax. Top price per kilo was 302p paid for a pen of exceptional 32.5kg Beltex lambs from Messrs A & JN Story, Newbiggin Farm, Kirklinton which sold to Andrew Dawson. 42 pens of lambs sold for £100 – £116 and many more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage.

CAST EWES – A larger show of cast sheep were forward resulting in a fantastic trade, all classes of sheep being £10-£15 dearer on the week. Topping the sale was a pen of Texel ewes from Messrs Ferguson, Priory Nook selling for £118.50 to Mr Bell, Lockerbie.
Well fleshed ewes were a lot easier to sell with leaner sorts being best value.
