At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 24th June, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock with a smaller show of 350 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 215 cast cows and stock bulls were forward to an increased ringside of buyers ensuring a sharper trade.
Messrs Sparke & Son, Little Swinburne sold the top priced Limousin cow for 883kg at 176.5p totalling £1558. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 898kg at 162.5p totalling £1459. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm sold two outstanding British Blue x cows for 763kg at 170.5p totalling £1300 and 741kg at 173.5p totalling £1285. Mr Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 1088kg at 119.5p totalling £1300. Messrs Little, The Guards sold a Limousin cow for 740kg at 165.5p totalling £1224.
A mixed show of black and white cows were forward with all buyers keen for black and white cows resulting in 10-15p up on the week. Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 794kg at 124.5p totalling £988. Messrs Dockeray, Kelsick Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 831kg at 117.5p totalling £976. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 809kg at 119.5p totalling £966. Messrs Horsley, Whitrigg Grange sold a Holstein x cow for 821kg at 116.5p totalling £956.

A smaller show of 9 stock bulls on offer DA Harrison, Hill Holme Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1071kg at 169.5p totalling £1815. Messrs Hutchinson, Chapel Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1167kg at 133.5p £1557. Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill sold a Limousin stock bull for 1030kg at 145.5p totalling £1498.

PRIME BULLS: Yet another big show of 103 prime bulls were forward with trade no different on the week. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Norman, Little Orton achieving £1520.19 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. British Blue crosses from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream peaked at £1372.68. Top overall pence per kilo of 203.5ppk was attained by a Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. British Blue crosses from the same home topped at 199.5ppk and was purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.
Dairy Bred bulls peaked at £1106.66 for a Fleckvieh from Connell Farm, East Drummoddie, Newton Stewart and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. The same animal also topped the pence per kilo in this section at 176.5ppk.

PRIME CATTLE – Another very good show of 62 prime steers and heifers were forward, with a good trade achieved for all classes. Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendor also sold the top priced British Blue cross to £1602. Top pence per kilo of 225ppk was attained by Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill.
In the heifer section, the top overall was a Limousin cross for Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont achieving £1490.75 and was purchased b Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Aberdeen Angus crosses from the same vendor also topped at £1459.05 and was purchased by Mr Steven Wilson Butchers. The top pence per kilo in this section was 239.5ppk and was achieved by Messrs Miller, West farm Aspatria with a marvellous Limousin cross heifer, purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Others sold to 237.5ppk from Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and was purchased by David Whaite.
Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

PRIME SHEEP– The weekly sale of prime sheep had a great entry of 1612 prime lambs were forward. Another fantastic trade was obtained with an overall average of 216p again defying trade nationally. More new vendors were forward this week and left delighted with their returns. Straight first cross export lambs regularly achieved 218-222ppk. Topping the sale at £114 and also being the top per kilo at 300p was an outstanding Texel x lamb from Messrs Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet which was purchased by Mr Robert Skelton. Again 32 lots sold in excess of £100 a head with the sale averaging £91.09 a head with lambs from 23kg upwards forward.

CAST EWES – A stronger entry of cast ewes and rams were forward and were met with a strong trade throughout. Topping the sale was a pen of Dutch Texel ewes from Mr G Anderson, Carrutherstown, selling for £127.50 to Mr M Bell, Lockerbie. Texels topped at £125.50 from E & I Hall, Hallington again selling to Mr Bell. Mules were once again in strong demand with top price coming from Messrs Routledge, Wigton selling to £75.50 to Mr R Skelton. Suffolks topped at £110 selling to Mr M Helliwell, Rochdale from Messrs Clark, Tobermore. Many more could have been sold to satisfy demand.
