At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 1st July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock with a good show of 345 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 226 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to an increased ring side of buyers which ensured a sharper trade throughout.

Messrs D A Harrison, Hill House Farm run of outstanding cows topped at 800kg, 182.5p, £1460 for a Charolais and 810kg 174.5p, £1413 for a Limousin x and 768 kg 182.5p, £1401 for a Blonde. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 755kg 178.5p, £1347.  Messrs Chalmers & Co, Outer Woodhead sold a British Blue x cow for 793kg 167.5p, £1328.

A good show of black and white cows were forward with all classes bring sharper on the week.  Messrs Harrison, Low House Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 927kg, 124.5p £1154.  Messrs Robinson, Burthwaite Farm’s Holstein x cows topped at 915kg, 117.5p £1075.  Another Holstein x cow consigned by Mr Colin Horsley, Whitrigg Grange weighed 886kg, 115.5p, totalling £1023. The top priced Friesian cow was sold by Messrs Coulthard, Laversdale Farm, for 682kg, 149.5p, £1019.  Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm, sold a Holstein x cow for 715kg, 141.5p, £1011.  Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 779kg, 129.5p £1008.  Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown’s Holstein x cows topped at 796kg, 126.5p £1006. Fleckvieh x cow from Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock House sold 761kg, 131.5p, £1000.

A larger show of 13 stock bulls were on offer.  Messrs Robinson-Wylie Ltd, Culbae Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1304kg, 128.5p, £1675.  Messrs Sparke & Son, Little Swinburne sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 957kg, 155.5p, £1483.  Messrs Elliott, Brackenhow, sold the top priced Blue stock bull which sold for 1062kg, 137.5p, totalling £1460.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of over 100 prime bulls forward with trade seeing no improvement. Top overall was a Limousin at £1504 from Messrs Logan, Humebyers, Kelso and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Blonde bulls sold to £1412 for Messrs Gibb, Jubilee Buildings, Stocksfield and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top pence per kilo of 198.5p came from the same home for another Blonde purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Black and whites peaked at £1070 for a Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie and top pence per kilo of 170.5p was attained by Messrs Graham, Stubbyknowe, Gretna for a Holstein cross.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 41 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a good trade considering other outlets current positions. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle who achieved £1660 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle peaked at £1621. Top pence per kilo of 229.5p was achieved for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Cope, Kirkland Guards, Wigton. Heifers topped at £1625 for a Limousin cross from Messrs McClelland, Stainburn House, Workington and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle others to £1549 from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton. Charolais sold to £1526 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and British Blues to £1400 from DA Harrison, Hill House. Top overall of 242.5ppk was attained by Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. More lightweight heifers required to fulfil demand

PRIME SHEEP– A great entry of 1561 head was forward, however numbers were less on the week, although more than 80 consignors represented the largest number of vendors in attendance so far this year.

An overall average of 204ppk was achieved, again showing returns well beyond other outlets trading today. Again no fewer than 38 lots of sheep sold to £100 – £115.80 with a great interest in heavy sheep, regularly selling to 215-224.1ppk.

The sale topped at £115.50 for a great pair of Blue Texel cross lambs from Mr H Currie, Eden Dales, Carlisle which sold to Mr M Bowe.

Topping the pence per kilo at 268.8ppk was a pair of superb Beltex cross lambs from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, Cargenbridge which sold to Mr A Dawson. Heavy Suffolk lambs sold to £113.80 from Messrs H Sykes, Talkin Head, Talkin, and to 218.7ppk from J Peden, Tara, Cargenbridge.

CAST EWES & RAMS – A larger show of ewes were forward, which saw all classes of sheep dearer on the week.

Topping the sale was a pen of Texel ewes from Messrs Graham, Plumpton selling to £125.50. Dutch Texels were bid to £120.50 from Messrs Wigham, Coanwood, and a strong show of Mules was present and topped at £79.50 from Messrs Atkinson, Aspatria again to Mr Skelton.
