At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 8th July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock with a smaller show of 320 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle along with 1653 prime and cast sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A mixed show of 215 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to a large ring side of buyers ensuring a great trade throughout.
Messrs Lawson, Hundith House’s run of cows topped at 856kg at 171.5p totalling £1468. Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 881kg at 157.5p totalling £1387. Messrs Watson, Sanders Close Limousin cows topped at 725kg at 183.5p totalling £1330. Messrs Williamson, Littleburn Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow for 775kg at 166.5p totalling £1290.
Black and white cows were again in great demand with Messrs Harrison, Low House Farm selling the top priced Holstein x cow for 955kgs at 124.5p totalling £1188. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 875kg at 129.5p totalling £1133 and 810kg at 129.5p totalling £1048. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 790kgs at 140.5p totalling £1122. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 875kgs at 126.5p totalling £1106. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 871kg at 124.5p totalling £1084. Messrs Paul & Son, Greigsland sold a Holstein x cow for 835kgs at 126.5p totalling £1056. Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield Farm sold the top priced MRI which sold for 832kg at 125.5p totalling £1044.
A smaller show of 7 stock bulls were forward. Messrs Darling & Sons, Stichill Home Farm sold the top priced British Blue bull for 1199kgs at 139.5p totalling £1672.

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller entry of only 42 prime bulls forward seeing trade sharper on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Carlisle who received £1586. Charolais from Messrs Wight, Carwood, Biggar to £1531 both purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Top overall pence per kilo of 204.5p was received by Messrs Gott, Propect House, Cockermouth for a Limousin and was purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Black and whites also saw a slight improvement in trade and peaked at £1115 for a Holstein from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown. More required for next week’s sale.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger entry of 64 prime steers and heifers forward with trade sharper on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer attaining £1723 from Howe Place Farm and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses sold to £1705 from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle the same home achieved top pence per kilo of 222.5p for another British Blue cross. Heifers saw a day’s top of £1704 for a British Blue cross from Howe Place Farm and purchased by Messrs McGimpsey, Brydekirk. Limousins to £1658 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Charolais crosses sold to £1542 from Messrs Barnett, Brinns Farm, Penrith and purchased by Messrs Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. Top overall pence per kilo of 245.5p was attained by Howe Place Farm for a Limousin cross and purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. British Blue crosses from Messrs Barnett, Brinns Farm sold to 241.5p and purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool the aforementioned Charolais cross from Messrs Barnett achieved 230.5p.

PRIME SHEEP– The weekly sale saw an increased entry of prime sheep, with a quality run of 1653 forward. Heavy weight lambs were well sought after however lighter lambs were harder to cash. Topping the trade at £120 was a 48kg Beltex from Messrs JC & SE Little, The Guards, Ireby, Wigton. Top pence per kilo went to the second top price lamb from Messrs Harrison, Swiss Cottage, Baggrow, Aspatria, Wigton, which weighted 42kg and sold for £113.80 resulting at 271ppk. An outstanding run of 81 lambs from Messrs Todd, Longhurst sold to average £99.44 or 209.15ppk.
