Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 15th July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a larger show of 485 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle were forward along with 1756 Prime and Cast sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 311 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with trade being slightly less on the week.  Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill run of Limousin cross cows topped at 812kg, 173.5p, £1408 and 810kg, 169.5p, £1372.  Messrs Harrison, Hill House Farm run of well fleshed cows topped at 740kg, 174.5p, £1291 for a Limousin cross.  Messrs James, Low Todholes sold a British Blue cross cow for 919kg, 139.5p, £1282.  Messrs Parsons, Slealands British Blue cross cows topped at 725kg, 172.5p, £1250.  Messrs Bell, Mossband Hall cows topped at 860kg, 141.5p, £1216 for a Limousin cross. Messrs Darling, Stichill Home Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 841kg, 144.5p, £1215.  Messrs Graham, Fell View sold two Limousin cross heifers for 181.5p and 170.5p.

Black and white cows would be less money on the week with Messrs Irving, Becton Hall selling a Holstein cross heifer for 763kg, 138.5p, £1056.  Smallthwaite Farms run of Holstein cross cows and heifers topped at 756kg, 136.5p, £1031 and 724kg, 137.5p, £995.  Messrs Threlkeld, Baileytown sold a Friesian cow for 790kg, 123.5p, £975.

A larger show of stock bulls were forward with Messrs Paterson, Kiltersan Farm selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1022kg, 146.5p, £1497.  Messrs Bell, Mossband Hall sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1080kg, 133.5p, £1441.  Messrs James, Midtodhills sold the top priced British Blue stock bull for 996kg, 133.5p, £1329.  Maxwell Farming sold the top priced Angus stock bull for 1097kg, 113.5p, £1245.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger show of 117 prime bulls forward with trade remaining hard to cash especially for plainer types.  Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Annett, Widdrington, Morpeth attaining £1577.12 and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  British Blues sold to £1503.49 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan.  Top overall pence per kilo of 209.5p was attained by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton and purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Black and whites peaked at £1011.29 from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie with a top pence per kilo of 167.5p from Messrs Graham, Laws Hall, Longtown.

PRIME CATTLE – Yet another good entry of 52 prime steers and heifers forward with trade as usual very good.  Top overall was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont who achieved £1631.70 purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle; the same vendor sold another to £1624.85 and was again purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers.  Messrs Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold the top priced British Blue cross and top priced Charolais cross to £1537.73 and £1518.15.  Top price per kilo of 235.5p and top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg and purchased by David Waite.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold another to 232.5p and again was purchased by David Waite.

Steers peaked at £1626.11 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle sold to £1524.39 and purchased by Pioneer Foods once again.  Top pence per kilo of 219.5p was achieved by Gill Farm and Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle for Limousin crosses.

PRIME SHEEP– Monday 15th July saw once again a larger entry of prime sheep at Borderway with a quality entry of 1756 forward. Trade proved very similar to last week seeing heavy weight and quality lambs very good to sell. Topping the trade was a superb pair of Texel x lambs from Messrs Browell, Quarry House Farm, Hexham peaking the sale at £114. Top price per kilo was paid for a tremendous Beltex lamb from Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Waterbeck weighing in at 40kg and selling for £107.80 or 269.5ppk. Large consignments also sold with ease seeing a pen of 16 Beltex lambs from Messrs Wood, Well Head, Dean, Workington weighing in at 40kgs and going on to sell for £100 or 250ppk. Plainer bred lambs were harder to cash once again seeing lighter mule bred lambs struggling to get to the 180ppk.

CAST EWES & RAMS – A good entry of 226 ewes were forward where leaner ewes continue to sell exceptionally well, topping todays sale at £122.50 were two cracking Texel ewes from Messrs Bell, Mossband Hall, Longtown and again for a Dutch Texel ewe from Messrs Wigham. Hargill House, Haltwhistle.  Rams also sold well, averaging £100.50.
