At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 22nd July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a good show of 340 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle were forward along with 2142 Prime and Cast sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good entry of 228 cows were on offer to an increased ring side of buyers with a much improved show of beef cows. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House’s run of cows topped at 757kg at 169.5p totalling £1283 for an outstanding Limousin x cow and 753kgs at 159.5p totalling £1201. Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm sold 4 well finished Limousin x heifers which topped at 869kgs at 146.5p totalling £1273 and 882kgs at 139.5p totalling £1230. Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn sold a Limousin cow for 779kgs at 159.5p totalling £1242. Mr David Airey, The Close sold a Limousin x cow for 796kgs at 154.5p totalling £1229. Messrs Oliver, Cawfield’s run of cows topped at 719kgs at 169.5p totalling £1218 for a Limousin x.
A plainer show of black and white cows was on offer however trade would be sharper on the week. Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield Farm sold an MRI for 884kgs at 123.5p totalling £1091. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 900kgs at 119.5p totalling £1075. Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft sold the top priced Friesian cow for 931kgs at 120.5p totalling £1001.
Only 4 stock bulls were on offer selling the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1229kgs at 127.5p totalling £1566.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 76 prime bulls forward seeing trade a fraction better on the week. Top overall was a Charolais cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan achieving £1498 the same vendors also sold top British Blue cross to £1425. Limousins sold to £1386 from Messrs Bragg and Sons, Holly Tree Farm, Wigton both of the previous purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.
Top pence per kilo overall of 203.5p was paid to Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Morpeth and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Black and whites peaked at £1046 for a Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Top pence per kilo of 154p was attained by Messrs Irving, Becton Hall, Canonbie.

PRIME CATTLE – A large show of 56 prime steers and heifers forward with trade sharper on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle achieving £1679 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle sold another to £1669. British Blue steers from Messrs Nicholson peaked at £1624 and top pence per kilo of 222.5p was achieved for a Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle.
Heifers were forward in good numbers and peaked at £1460 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by David Whaite Butcher. Messrs Story, Newbiggin sold another to £1446 purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill. Top Charolais cross came from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton selling at £1276. Top pence per kilo and overall top was another top quality Limousin cross from Jack Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton receiving 239.5p and purchased by David Whaite. More could have been sold to vendors advantage.

PRIME SHEEP– On Monday 22nd July Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw 1668 head of prime lambs and 474 head of cast sheep forward. Prime lambs averaged 182.9p for all weights and grades which is a great result yet again in comparison with other outlets.
The sale topped at £103.80 for an outstanding Beltex x lamb from RD & P Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton which was purchased by Morgan Helliwell; this lamb was also top pence per kilo at 247.1p. Closely following at £102 was first time vendor M & K Palmer, Grange Farm, Maryport who headed up a large contingent of West Cumbrian vendors this lamb was purchased by Mr Glenn Lomax.
