At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 30th July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a good show of 420 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle were forward along with 2260 Prime and Cast sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A plainer show of 269 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday, to the usual large ring side of buyers. Messrs Pattinson, Kinkry Hill Farm sold two outstanding British Blue crosses which topped at 819kg, 174.5ppk or £1429. Maxwell Farming Co run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 904kg, 132.5ppk or £1197. Mr Tom Byers, Ellen Bank sold the top priced Simmental cross cow for 816kg, 146.5ppk or £1195. Messrs Carruthers & Son, Wardhall sold the top priced Limousin cross cow which sold for 893kg, 133.5ppk or £1192.
A plain show of black and white cows were on offer with all classes being in great demand. Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield run of cows topped at 846kg, 127.5ppk or £1078. Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 859kg, 120.5ppk or £1035. Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House run of Holstein cross cow topped at 798kg, 125.5p or £1001. Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 791kg, 125.5ppk or £992.
A total 14 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Martin, Horseholm Farm sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1778. Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm sold an outstanding Limousin stock bull for 1191kg, 131.5ppk or £1566. Messrs McKelvey, Burnside also sold a Limousin stock bull for 1054kg,

PRIME CATTLE – Yet another good entry of 54 prime steers and heifers were forward, with a plainer offering evident, however trade remained good. Top overall was a Charolais cross heifer achieving £1702.26 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousin crosses sold to £1634.04 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton and purchased by W Hall, Butchers, Stranraer. Others sold to £1536.50 from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, and was purchased by Mr Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Top overall pence per kilo of 237.5ppk was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for a British Blue cross and purchased by W Hall Butchers.
Steers sold to a day’s top of £167.11 for a Limousin and purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses sold to £1670.09 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle and was purchased again by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 221.5ppk attained by Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle for a Limousin cross.

PRIME SHEEP– On Monday 29th July Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which saw 2038 lambs and 320 cast ewes and rams forward. A larger show of lambs was forward with all classes well bid for. Best export types and heavy lambs met a great demand throughout the sale.
A pen of superb Dutch Texel x lambs topped the market both per head and per kilo, these were consigned by Messrs Thompson, Wood Head, Scaleby and sold for £103.80 (247.1ppk) and were purchased by Mr A Dawson. Messrs Thompson sold 22 lambs to average £99.52 (233.16ppk). Heavy lambs sold to 200ppk for a single Beltex x lamb shown by Messrs Murray, The Throp and to £100 on three occasions, twice for texels from Messrs Brown, The Willows, Seaton and also for a Texel from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft, Waverton. Light lambs were also in demand with a pen pf 32kg Texel x Herdwick lambs from NJ & C Barker, Little Bank End Farm, Appleby selling at £60 a head.
