At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 2nd September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep. A good entry of 475 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 3186 prime and cast sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 339 Cast Cows and Stock Bulls were presented to an increased ring side of buyers which ensured that good well finished cows would be sharper on the week.
Mr Neil Forrester, Down-by-Rigg sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 808kg, 232.5p, £1878. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm run of great cows topped at 799kg, 205.5p, £1641 and 839kg, 178.5p, £1497 for Limousin crosses. Messrs Carr, Little Bavington sold a pure British Blue cow for 867kg, 187.5p, £1625. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold a Limousin cow for 947kg, 165.5p, £1567. Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall run of Limousin cross cows topped at 832kg, 173.5p, £1443. Messrs Lee & Sons, Agars Hill sold a British Blue cow for 686kg, 180.5p, £1238.
A large show of black and white cows were on offer with good cows being in great demand. Messrs Shaw & Sons, Redhouse sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 923kg, 124.5p, £1149. Messrs Weatherly, Windy Hill sold the top priced Brown Swiss cow for 739kg, 152.5p, £1126. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown run of cows topped at 933kg, 119.5p, £1114. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced Friesian cow which sold for 835kg, 124.5p, £1039. Mr Brian Yates, East Logan Holstein cross cows topped at 920kg, 109.5p, £1007.
A small show of 7 stock bulls were on offer, Messrs Carr, Little Bavington sold the top priced British Blue stock bull for 1096kg, 163.5p, £1791. Messrs Dixon, Chirdon sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1021kg, 141.5p, £1444.

PRIME CATTLE – A very good entry of 56 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes proving harder to cash. Top overall was a Limousin cross heifer from Howplace receiving £1670 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold the top priced Charolais cross to £1497 and again purchased by Pioneer Foods. The above Limousin cross also attained top pence per kilo of 219.5p. Steers sold to a top of £1583 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle; the same vendor also sold the top priced pence per kilo of 214.5p and both were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. PRIME SHEEP – On Monday 2nd September Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale which saw a great entry of 2853 lambs and 333 cast ewes.
A great entry of 2853 prime lambs saw a rise of 1100 head on last year’s corresponding date. All classes were keenly bid for however, leaner sorts again saw a lessor demand. The sale averaged 178ppk for all weights and grades. The sale topped at £113.80 for an exceptional pair of Dutch Texel x lambs from Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead which were purchased by Mulhollands Butcher, Great Orton. These lambs also topped per kilo at 255.7p. Closely following at 252.1p was a stunning pen of Beltex cross lambs from A & A Little, Hollands, Penton selling to Mr A Dawson. Suffolk’s sold to £89.80 pen a pen of 15 from Messrs Walker, Morton Farm to Mr M Lomax. Mules sold to £80 for a pen from Messrs B & I Scott, Seat House, High Seaton, Workington.
