At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 9th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep.  A good entry of 458 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 2109 prime and cast sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 303 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with a keen ringside of buyers ensuring a great trade throughout.

Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a British Blue cross cow for 823kg, 169.5p, £1394.  Messrs Irving, New Sandsfield sold a British Blue cross cow for 831kg, 166.5p, £1383.  Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm run of well finished cows topped at 700kg, 174.5p, £1221 for a British Blue cross.  Messrs Harrison & Sons Ltd, Aikhead run of cows topped at 929kg, 125.5p, £1165 for a Charolais and 676kg, 163.5p, £1105 for a British Blue cross.  Messrs Carruthers, Silloans run of Limousin cows topped at 651kg, 178.5p, £1162.  Messrs Wigham, Hargill House Limousin cows topped at 763kg, 149.5p, £1140.  Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Limousin cows topped at 636kg, 177.5p, £1128.

All classes of black and white cows were in great demand, Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow run of cows topped at 879kg, 118.5p, £1041 for a Holstein cross.  Messrs Rogerson & Son, Ward Park sold a Holstein cross cow for 817kg, 124.5p, £1017.  Messrs Mandale & Sons, Lambfield Farm run of cows topped at 818g, 121.5p, £993 for a Holstein cross and 914kg, 108.5p, £991 for a Danish Red.  Messrs Henderson & Sons, Park House sold a Holstein cross cow for 804kg, 122.5p, £984.  Messrs Baird, Red Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 827kg, 118.5p, £980.

A good show of 8 stock bulls were on offer, Messrs Miller, West Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1177kg, 166.5p, £1959.  Messrs Carruthers, Silloans sold a Limousin stock bull for 1049kg, 170.5p, £1788.  Messrs Faulder, Crofthouse sold a Limousin stock bull for 1061kg, 166.5p, £766.

PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 90 prime bulls were forward with trade very similar to that of last week.  Top overall was a superb Limousin bull from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton who achieved £1594.85 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.  Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie sold another to £1493.88.  British Blue cross sold to £1456.04 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Messrs Ridley also attained top overall pence per kilo of 213.5p for the aforementioned Limousin.

Black and whites sold to a top of £1073.64 for a Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie with top pence per kilo of 153.50 paid to Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger entry of 65 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes easily sold seeing a days top of £1607.97 for a Charolais cross steer from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Limousins sold to £1606.50 from Messrs Craig, Waterside Farm, Castle Douglas and again purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top pence per kilo steer was a Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie attaining 219.5p.

Heifers sold to a days top of £1494.80 from Messrs Neil, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries, Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold another to £1422.02 purchased by Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Top overall pence per kilo of 239.5p was attained twice, both times by Messrs Armstrong, Terrace Farm, Cockermouth for Limousin cross heifers and both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Please advise entries.

PRIME SHEEP – On Monday 9th September Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of 1809 lambs and 300 cast ewes.

Prime lambs again met a two-tiered trade with well fleshed sheep meeting a good demand however leaner types are proving more challenging by the week. An overall average of 169.2ppk and SQQ of 174.3p shows a very favourable return on other outlets.

Topping the sale at £100.80 was a fantastic Texel x lamb from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall which sold to Mr M Helliwell. Messrs Musgrave also topped per kilo at 232.4p for a great pair of Beltex lambs which sold to Mr R Skelton. Messrs Musgrave’s run of 27 averaged £89.73 a head (206.35ppk).

Messrs Oliver, Walton Wood Head sold 63 Beltex x lambs to average £88.72 (209.31p) to a top of £95.80 for a pen of 6 weighing 42kg to Mr A Dawson.
