Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 16th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep.  A good entry of 506 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 2822 prime and cast sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 360 cast cows ad stock bulls were presented to an increased ringside of buyers. Taking advantage of the large entry of cows at Carlisle, Whitwell Farms run of cows topped at 916kg, 175.5ppk or £1607 for a British Blue cross. Messrs Richardson & Son, Ghyll House cows topped at 829kg, 174.5ppk or £1446 for a Limousin cross. Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill sold the top priced Blonde cow for 874kg, 159.5ppk or £1394. Messrs Oliver & Sons, Walton Woodhead sold a Limousin cross heifer for 188.5ppk.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with all classes in great demand. Messrs Metcalf, Palm Strothers Farm run of well finished Holstein cross cows topped at 932kg, 121.5ppk or £1132 and to 863kg, 127.5ppk or £1100. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 862kg, 123.5ppk or £1064 and to 915kg, 115.5ppk or £1056. Messrs Graves, Elephant Farm Holstein cross cows topped at 860kg, 122.5ppk or £1053. Messrs McMiken, Arbrack Farming run of Holstein cross cows topped at 864kg, 121.5ppk or £1049. Messrs Graham & Sons, Campfield Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 845kg, 118.5ppk or £1001.

CAST BULLS – A larger show of 13 stock bulls were on offer with Whitewalls Farms selling the top priced British Blue stock bull for 1051kg, 159.5ppk or £1676, and a Limousin stock bull from the same home selling to 978kg, 148.5ppk or £1452. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Pedder Hill sold the top price Aberdeen Angus stock bull to 1008kg, 146.5ppk or £1476.

PRIME BULLS – A much larger entry of 114 prime bulls were forward with trade being sharper for all well fleshed bulls and less for all plainer types.  Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Wight, Whitrigghill, Melrose receiving £1615.23 and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.  Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold the top British Blue cross to £1440.78 and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Simmentals sold too £1403.19 from Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg, Newton Stewart and again purchased by Ralph Pearson.  Top pence per kilo of 208p was attained twice, firstly by Messrs Wight, Melrose and secondly by Messrs Twentyman, Wigton.

Black and whites proved harder to cash due to the poor show on offer, best bulls peaked at £1040 for a Holstein from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and Messrs Graham, Laws Hall, Longtown sold the top pence per kilo of 178.5p purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 37 prime steers and heifers were forward with trade a little sharper on the week.  Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton who attained £1616.64 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Charolais to £1544.33 from Messrs Harrington, Hoskett Hill, Carlisle with top pence per kilo of 210.5p being for the aforementioned steer from Messrs Dickinson.

Heifers topped at £1538.76 from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton for a Limousin cross and again purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top overall pence per kilo of 240.5p was paid to Messrs Bowe, Wigton for another Limousin cross and was purchased by Stephen Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle with Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton selling another to 237.5p purchased by King Street Butchers.  Messrs Millers run of five Limousin cross heifers sold to average 232.5p.  More could have been sold to vendors advantage, please speak to auctioneer Grant Anderson.

PRIME SHEEP – On Monday 16th September 2019 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which drew 2532 head of lambs and 290 head of cast sheep with lamb numbers being 1002 more on the year.

Carlisle again led the national averages with an overall average of 171.73p (SQQ 177.29p) or £77.87 per head being with more new and returning vendors taking advantage of this week on week.

The sale topped at £103.80 for a first-class pen of 4 Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle, this pen also topped per kilo at 241p selling to Mr A Dawson, Messrs Wigham sold their usual outstanding run of 56 lambs to average £91.41 per head.

Heavy lambs sold to £100 for a terrific Texel from Messrs Hodgson, White House, Glassonby to Mr R Skelton and to 205.9p for an admirable pair of Beltex lambs rom Tom & Julia Airey, New Grange Farm, Dearham with their exceptional run of 30 averaging £89.70.
