Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 23rd September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep.  A large entry of 520 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 3230 prime and cast sheep.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A larger show of 360 cast cows and stock bulls were forward.

Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm run of Limousin cows topped at 945kg, 148.5ppk or £1416 and to 846kg, 149.5ppk or £1264. Shankbridge End Farms sold a Charolais cow for 840kg, 146.5ppk or £1230. Messrs Cleasby, Linden House also sold a Charolais cow for 835kg, 146.5ppk or £1220. Messrs Irving, Becton Hall sold the top priced British Blue cross cow which sold for 942kg, 129.5ppk or £1219. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Aikhead run of cows topped at 865kg, 139.5ppk or £1206 for an Aberdeen Angus. Mr George Brough, Old Rectory Farm sold a Limousin for 168.5ppk. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold a Limousin for 163.5ppk. Messrs Strong, Well House sold a Limousin cross for 161.5ppk.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer, with Greentower Farms selling the top price Holstein cross cow for 875kg, 125.5ppk or £1098. Messrs McMiken, Upper Barr run of Holstein cross cows topped at 840kg, 126.5pk or £1062. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein cross for 848kg, 122.5ppk or £1038. Messrs Irving, Becton Hall sold a Holstein cross for 910kg, 113.5ppk or £1032. Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers sold the top priced Montbelairde cross cow which sold for 774kg, 128.5ppk or £994. Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall sold Holstein cross heifers to 130.5ppk or 128.5ppk. Messrs Gillespie, High Ploughlands selling a Holstein cross heifer for 130.5ppk.  Messrs Peile, Parkgate Hall sold a British Friesian cow for 744kg, 126.5ppk or £941.

CAST BULLS – A larger show of 13 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Edgar, Fellside Farm selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1031kg, 143.5ppk or £1479.

PRIME BULLS – A larger entry of 120 prime bulls were forward, with trade once again sharper on the week, for better quality and well fleshed sorts, while plainer bulls were hard to sell.

Top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle selling to £1520 to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. British Blue crosses from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton topped at £1430 and again purchased by Ralph Pearson. The same vendor also attained the top pence per kilo of 216.5ppk for a Limousin, purchased by Mr Geoff Nutter. Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, Appleby sold another to 215.5ppk, also purchased by Mr Nutter. British Blues from Osborne Farm sold to 213.5ppk.

Black and Whites peaked at £1129.24 from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton, and to a top of 174.5ppk from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle, purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A slightly larger entry of 40 prime steers and heifers were forward, whereby many more could have been sold easily. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth, who received £1577.75 and was purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Charolais sold to £1525.48 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill Farm, Carlisle, and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Stabiliser crosses sold to £1411 from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 216.5ppk was attained by Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm for a Limousin cross.

Heifers topped at £1517.62 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Charolais crosses sold to £1450.43 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont. Simmentals sold to £1425.93 from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth, and was purchased by Mr David Whaite, Blackpool. Top overall pence per kilo of 229.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and purchased also by David Whaite.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which saw an entry of 3230 head forward comprising of 2610 lambs and 620 cast sheep.

Prime lambs again came forward in great numbers with over 1000 head more on the year. The SQQ average for the sale was 171.97p and the whole sale averaged £74.64 a head. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston brought their usual impeccable run of Beltex x lambs which topped the sale at £100 for a tremendous single lamb which sold to Mr M Helliwell. Messrs Musgrave also topped per kilo with another pen selling at 241p to Mr A Dawson with their consignment levelling at £91.55 a head.

A large show of ewes sold well throughout to a top at £108.50 for a pen of 4 Texels to Mr G Lomax.
