At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 30th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep. One of the largest entries of 708 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 2250 prime and cast sheep.
CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – The largest show of 508 cast cows and stock bulls were forward.
Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall run of outstanding British Blue cows topped at 950kg, 182.5ppk or £1733, and to 188.5ppk from the same home. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor run of Limousin cows topped at 951kg, 161.5ppk or £1535 and to 896kg, 159.5ppk or £1429. Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm run of Limousin cross cows topped at 963kg, 147.5ppk or £1420 and to 813kg, 170.5ppk or £1386. Messrs Wilson, Belzies sold a British Blue cow for 838kg, 164.5ppk or £1378. Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 774kg, 177.5ppk or £1373. Messrs Chappelhow, high Grounds sold Limousin cross cows for 176.5ppk and 168.5ppk.
A plain show of Black and White cows were forward with Messrs Shepherd, Crownstone Farm selling to a top price of British Friesian cow for 874kg, 116.5ppk or £1018. Messrs Crichton & Son, Limekilns Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 830kg, 122.5ppk or £1016. Messrs Crichton & Son sold a Fleckvieh cross heifer for 134.5ppk. Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold a Holstein cross for 783kg, 128.5ppk or £1006.

PRIME BULLS – A huge show of 140 prime bulls were forward, whereby all classes met a straight trade. Quality and flesh is top of the orders with plainer, leaner types still hard to cash.
Top overall was a Charolais bull from Messrs Sisterson, Newlands Haugh Farm, Consett who attained £1517.55. Limousin sold to £1458.98 from Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, Appleby and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Bradford. British Blues sold to £1339.05 from Messrs Brers, Ellen Bank, Wigton and Simmentals to £1338.42 from Messrs Lowry, New Steadings Farm, Lanark.
Top overall pence per kilo of 208.5ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington, purchased by Ralph Pearson, Bradford, and secondly by Messrs Raine, Niven Hill, Gretna, purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

PRIME CATTLE – A good show of 65 prime steers and heifers were forward, whereby all classes were very easily sold to vendors advantage.
Top overall was an outstanding Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, receiving £1599.50 and was purchased by Messrs Mathers, Kelso. A Charolais cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby peaked at £1562.38 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues to £1366.12 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm.
Top pence per kilo and top overall was the aforementioned Limousin cross from Messrs Blake receiving 228.5ppk. Messrs Dent, Elm House sold another to 227.5ppk and was purchased by Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.
Steers topped at £1564.97 for a superb Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton. Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle sold another to £1530.34, both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendor also sold the top priced British Blue cross to £1519.79, and Charolais to £1489.15 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie.
Topping the steer pence per kilo of 213.5p was attained by Messrs Storey, Limestone, Penrith, purchased by David Whaite.

PRIME SHEEP – A smaller entry of 1909 lambs and 341 ewes were forward at the weekly sale.
The lesser number was down to a poor day’s weather on Sunday, and the downturn in trade last week, nether the less, those who showed lambs would be pleasantly surprised with their returns. An SQQ of 167.4ppk was achieved, showing a 10-12p increase In trade towards the middle to end of last week.
Tom & Julia Airey brought their usual exemplary run of Beltex x Texel cross lambs from New Grange Farm, Dearham which topped the market both per kilo and per head. A pen of three voluptuous Beltex achieved £100 per head (255.3ppk) to Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton. This great run averaged £91.74 per head.
Messrs Pickworth, Dotland Park, Hexham made a return to Carlisle this week, with a prodigious run od Beltex lambs. A pen of ten from this farm sold to £92.30 for 41.5kg, and the consignment averaged £88.98.
The ‘Bonny Boys’ competition of Mule wethers was won by JJ & E Lawson, Hundith House, Aspatria with their pen of ten, selling to £75 per head to Mr R Skelton.
