Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 7th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep.  Once again a large show of 545 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 2256 prime and cast sheep.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A large show of 372 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with all classes being less on the week.

Messrs Haigh, Breckonhill Farm sold a British Blue cow for 784kg, 179.5p, £1407.  Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm run of Limousin cows topped at 806kg, 163.5p, £1317 and 888kg, 147.5p, £1309.  Messrs Lawson & Son, South Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 1066kg, 114.5p, £1220 and an Aberdeen Angus heifer from the same home sold for 752kg, 159.5p, £1199.  DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of cows topped at 795kg, 152.5p, £1212 for Limousin cross.  Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill sold the top priced Blonde cow for 796kg, 149.5p, £1190.  Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 864kg, 135.5p, £1170.

A mixed show of Black and White cows on offer with trade being less for all classes.  Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 896kg, 107.5p, £963.  Messrs Jopson & Son, Hestham Hall Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 767kg, 119.5p, £916.  Messrs Whitfield, Pelutho Grange sold a Holstein cross cow for 806kg, 112.5p, £906.  Messrs Wilson, Broadlea sold a Holstein cross cow for 764kg, 118.5p, £905.

PRIME BULLS – A good show of 94 prime bulls were forward and were harder to cash on the week.

Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Cowx, Hudscales, Wigton who attained £1484.82 purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie, Messrs Annett, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth sold another to £1452.16, Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold to £1443.99 and Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat to £1434.45.

Top pence per kilo of 199.5p was attained by Messrs Miller, West Farm, Carlisle and purchased by Bowland Foods.

Black and Whites peaked at £1147.54 from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A very good entry of 78 prime steers and heifers were forward, with a buoyant trade being achieved for all best fleshed cattle. Top overall was a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton receiving £1632.07, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1525.57 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 209.5ppk was also achieved by Messrs Bowe, Bothel.

In the heifer section, top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle selling to £1472.40, and purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses sold to £1472.04 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont to Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Charolais crosses sold to £1333.99 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle. Top overall pence per kilo of 238.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton, and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. The same vendor also sold another to 231.5ppk, purchased by David Whaite. A British Blue also sold to the 231.5ppk, this time going to Steven Wilson Butchers.

PRIME SHEEP – A wet and wild weekend took its toll on anticipated numbers with 2256 head forward, trade saw an uplift to average 176.4p overall (184p SQQ) which equates to £78.29 a head.

The sale topped at £111.80 for a Dutch Texel single from R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead; this lamb also topped per kilo at 266.2p selling to Wright Bros, Boston.  Messrs Scotts run of 36 averaged £93.97 a head with another pen of 10 at £102.80.

Tom and Julia Airey, New Grange Farm, Dearham sold another run of lambs to a top of £103.80 for a pen of 3 Beltex which sold to Mr R Skelton with their run averaging £91.70.  J Oliver & Sons, Walton Woodhead, Brampton sold 2 pens of Beltex, a 6 and a 10, at £100.80 or 240ppk with their run of 52 levelling at £92.40 a head.

Heavy lambs sold to £95.80 for a Texel lamb from Claremont Properties, Hay Close, Calthwaite.

Mule lambs saw a great trade to a top of £75.80 twice from Messrs Inman, Kilnknowe and averaged £72.41 a head.
