Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 14th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep.  Once again a large show of 506 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with a larger show of 2800 prime and cast sheep.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A large show of 342 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with Messrs Telfer, Newton High House selling an outstanding British Blue cow 925kg at 179.5ppk or £1660.38. Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 892kg at 144.5ppk or 1288.94. M/s Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold the top priced Limousin cow for 751kg at 162.5ppk or £1220.38. M/s Rogerson, Maison Gill sold the top priced Blonde cow for 750kg at 156.5ppk or £1173.75. M/s Bowe, Midtown Farm sold a Limousin cow for 735kg at 159.5ppk or £1172.33.

A plain show of black and white cows were of offer with Abrack Farming sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 907kg at 99.5ppk which sold to £902.47. Upper Barr Ltd sold a Holstein cross cow for 872kg at 101.5ppk or £885.08 and another at 863kg at 102.5ppk or £884.58.

CAST BULLS – Messrs Cowx, Hudscales sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1127kg at 134.5ppk which came to £1515. M/s Fish, Crossrigg Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 867kg at 135.5ppk which came £1174.

PRIME BULLS – The usual entry of 91 prime bulls were forward with all classes slightly sharper on the week. Top overall was a British Blue from Messrs Elliott, Askrigg Hall, Penrith who attained £1672.81 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Limosuins sold to £1641.23 from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith. Charolais bulls sold to £1594.01 from Messrs Sisterson, Newlands Haugh Farm, Consett.

Top pence per kilo of 205.5ppk was received by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and was purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. British Blues topped at 204.5ppk for the aforementioned bull.

Black and whites sold to £1011.23 from Messrs Wise, Low Tarns, Wigton, and purchased by Messrs Wight, Boston. Top pence per kilo of 164.5ppk was attained by Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm, Penrith, again purchased by Messrs Wight, Boston.

PRIME CATTLE –Yet another good entry of 73 prime steers and heifers forward with a similar trade achieved on the week. Top overall was a marvellous Charolais cross steer from regular vendors Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill Farm, Carlisle who attained £1557.95 which was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousins sold to £1506.45 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie, purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. The same vendor also sold the top priced British Blue cross to £1504.26 to Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 209.5ppk was attained twice for Limousins , both times by Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle.

Heifers saw an overall top price of £1494.95 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith which was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 216.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton purchased by David Whaite. Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport sold another to 215.5ppk which was purchased by Alan Jarvis on behalf of a butcher.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime sheep saw an entry of 2800 forward. A larger show of lambs were forward and were met with spirited demand throughout the sale, resulting in an overall average of 171.46ppk or £78.24 per head, up 5ppk on the year.

The sale was topped at £115.80 for exceptional single Beltex cross lamb from Messrs WL Musgrave & Sons, Cardew Hall, Dalston, purchased by Mulholland’s Butchers, Great Orton.

Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle topped the sale per kilo at 264.7ppk for a fabulous Dutch Texel which sold to £113.80 for 43kg, to A Wight & Son, Boston.

Suffolk lambs sold to £90 from Messrs DG Reid & Son, Calf Park, Mouswald which sold to Mr M Bowe.

Mules sold to £80 for a pen of ten from Messrs Browell, Quarry House, Hexham, and averaged £72.98 for the total entry.

Hill lambs sold to £74 for Blackface again from Messrs Browell, and averaged £71.98 the entire entry.

Ram lambs were in demand throughout the sale, with a great run of 39 from Messrs ME & JJ Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton topping at £93 and averaging £88.29
