At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 4tth November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep and once again a large show of over 500 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with over 2000 prime and cast sheep were forward.
CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A good show of 309 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with trade being good throughout.
Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 839kg, 154.5ppk or £1296. Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House run of cows topped at 780kg, 164.5ppk or £1283 and to 799kg 143.5ppk or £1146 both for Limosuin crosses, both selling to Owain Llyr. Mr George Wilson, Reddings sold a Limousin cow for 730kg, 158.5ppk or £1157 also selling to Mr Llyr. Messrs Fisher Reaygarth sold a Limousin cross cow for 764kg, 149.5ppk or £1142 to Mr Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside sold the top priced Simmental cross cow for 685kg, 159.5ppk or £1092 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold the top priced pence per kilo cow which sold for 166.5ppk to Owain Llyr.
Messrs Murrya & Son, Conheath Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow which sold for 984kg, 98.5ppk or £969 to Mr Thomas Fell. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold a Holstein cross cow for 1063kg, 89.5ppk or £951.39 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messse Bland & Son, The Flatt sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 723kg, 131.5ppk or £950 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Haston, Dearham Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 132.5ppk and to 129.5ppk. Messrs Wilson, Gate Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 131.5ppk.

PRIME BULLS – The weekly sale of prime bulls had a great entry of 110 forward, with trade being similar to last week,
Topping the sale at £1694 was a Limousin from Mr Steven Wilson, Corby Hill, to Mr Kirkpatrick. British Blues topped at £1501.38 from Messrs Twentyman selling to Mr Les Fell. Charolais from Messrs Goldie, Ruthwell sold to £1544 also to Mr Fell.
Topping the pence per kilo was a British Blue cross from Mr Twentyman, Osborne Farm selling to 219.5ppk, again to Mr Fell. Timousins topped at 216.5ppk from Messrs Wight & Son, Carwood Farm, Biggar, once again to Mr Fell.

PRIME CATTLE – Yet another large show of 76 prime steers and heifers forward, whereby all classes once again met a fast trade with a large ringside of 11 active bidders. Top overall was a Limousin steer from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton receiving £1569.92 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle with Charolais selling to £1471.47 from Messrs Pearson, High Plaskett Lands, Maryport. Top pence per kilo of 214.5p was attained twice, firstly by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and secondly by Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands.
Heifers were again forward in good numbers and peaked at £1499.74 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont with Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth selling top price Limousin cross to £1428.23 both purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo and overall top of 229.5p was achieved by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle.

PRIME SHEEP – A strong show of prime lambs were forward with all classes selling sharper on the week, and 40-45kg weights taking the biggest list in price. The sale averaged 177ppk (SQQ 187.5ppk), which shows a healthy rise on the week.
Topping the trade at £102 was a great pen of 4 Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Laird, Unity Farm selling to Mr A Dawson.
Top pence per kilo were also Dutch Texels, this time a pen of 6 from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, which sold to 245.3ppk to Mr Morgan Helliwell.
Mule lambs also sold well, with a great run of 25 from Messrs Hope, Albierigg selling to average £78.
