At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 25th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep where once again a very good entry of 575 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 2824 prime and cast sheep were forward.
CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A large show of 575 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with a large ringside of buyers ensuring a great trade for all classes.
Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall run of Limousin cows topped at 780kg, 173.5p, £1353 to Owain Llyr and 653kg, 174.5p, £1139 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall sold a Limousin cross cow for 719kg, 174.5p, £1254 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Trafford, Peter House sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 803kg, 163.5p, £1312 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold a Limousin cow for 815kg, 159.5p, £1299 also to Charles Kirkpatrick. Crowhall Farms run of cows topped at 758kg, 165.5p, £1254 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Wallace, Gapshields sold a Limousin cross cow for 605kg, 168.5p, £1019 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Wight & Sons, Midlock sold a Shorthorn cross cow for 754kg, 163.5p, £1232 to Sean McGimpsey.
A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with all classes being in great demand. Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold two black and white bullocks for 720kg, 141.5p, £1018 and 709kg, 141.5p, £1003 both purchased by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Fisher & Co, Geltside sold the top price Montbeliarde cross cow for 680kg, 140.5p, £955 and Swedish Reds from the same home sold to 651kg, 143.5p, £934 and 661kg, 136.5p, £902 purchased by Sean McGimpsey and Thomas Fell. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 894kg, 105.5p, £943 to Dovecote Park.

PRIME BULLS – A large entry of 120 bulls were forward and were met by buoyant trade with good bulls remaining very dear and plainer sorts being harder to cash. Topping the sale was a British Blue coming from Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall selling for £1696.70 to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Limousins topped at £1654.06 from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor also selling to Ralph Pearsons. Charolais were bid to £1602.68 from J Wight & Son, Biggar selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.
Top pence per kilo was for a British Blue from Brain Hall, selling at 223.5p to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. A lot more good bulls could have been sold to vendors advantage.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 47 prime steers and heifers forward selling at a sharper trade to that of last week. Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie who attained £1598.49 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth sold another to £1587.96 also purchased by Pioneer Foods; the same vendors also sold top overall heifer with a Limousin cross selling to £1540.82. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold another to £1510.11. British Blue crosses from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall sold to £1344.72.
Top pence per kilo overall was 229.5p attained by Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby with a Limousin cross heifer; steers from the same home peaked at 223.5p purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool.

PRIME SHEEP –
Another great turnout of 2639 lambs at Borderway on Monday 25th November 2019 met a great demand for all classes once again with an average of 189.21p (SQQ 197.49) levelling at £86.33 a head.
Messrs A & A Little, Hollands, Penton again rang the bell in Borderway with their leading pen of Beltex lambs topping the sale both per kilo and per head, weighing 38kg and selling at 300ppk, £114 to Mr R Skelton.
A large number of sheep from West Cumbria were forward and saw Tom & Julia Airey, New Grange top from this region with Beltex lambs selling at £111.80 to Morgan Helliwell.
Mule lambs met an exceptional trade once more to a top of £90 for a pen of 25 from Messrs Browell, Quarry House, Hexham and to 186.4ppk (44kg, £82) for a pen of 32 from Neil Marston, Millstone Moor, Cockermouth.
