At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 30th December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 125 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, together with 3260 sheep.
Due to the holiday period another smaller entry of 67 cast cows were forward, with all buyers coming forward to ensure a strong trade throughout.
CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 908kgs, 123.5p or £1121 and 824kgs, 127.5p or £1050 both bought by Dovecote Park. Messrs Chappelhow, High Grounds sold a Holstein cross cow for 817kgs, 126.5p or £1033 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Wilson & Sons, Marsh House sold a Holstein cross cow for 803kgs, 126.5p or £1031 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Henderson & Son, Parkhouse Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 798kgs, 125.5p or £1001 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Beaty, Stonewalls sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 789kgs, 123.5p or £974 also to Dovecote Park. Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 135.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Jefferson, High Pow run of Holstein cross cows topped at 812kgs, 122.5p or £994 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Harrison, Woodhouse consignment of Holstein bred cows topped at 704kgs, 133.5p or £939 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold a Limousin cross cow for 702kgs, 136.5p or £958 to Mr C Kirkpatrick. Messrs Carlyle, Slealands Burn sold an outstanding Limousin stock bull for 1071kgs, 141.5p or £1515 to Mr C Kirkpatrick.

PRIME BULLS – A good show of 50 Prime bulls were on offer with a very keen ringside of buyers present which resulted in one of the dearest trades seen for sometime.
Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm run of outstanding bulls sold for 595kgs, 235.5p or £1401.50 and 599kgs, 232.5p or £1392 and 645kgs, 218.5p or £1409 for Limousin crosses bought by Bowland Foods on two occasions and the third was purchased by Morgan Helliwell.
Mr Tom Byres, Ellen Bank consignment of bulls topped at 577kgs, 229.5p or £1324 for a Charolais bought by Bowland Foods and a Limousin cross from the same home sold for 685kgs, 227.5p or £1558 to Ralph Pearson and a Limousin cross bull sold for 610kgs, 227.5p or £1387 sold to Morgan Helliwell who also bought a Limousin cross bull from Messrs Brown, Willows Farm which sold for 657kgs, 227.5p or £1494. Messrs Gott, Prospect House sold Limousin cross bulls which topped at 659kgs, 226.5p or £1492 and 607kgs, 225.5p or £1368 both purchased by Bowland Foods.
Messrs Brown, Willows Farm, sold the top priced Holstein bred bull for 587kgs, 189.5p or £1112 bought by Bowland Foods and a Friesian bulls from the same home sold for 574kgs, 132.5p or £1047 going to Bowland Foods. Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton Farm run of Holstein cross bulls sold up to 708kgs, 155.5p or £1100 to Jewitts. Mr David Graham, South Lambhill run of Holstein cross bulls topped at 745kgs, 146.5p or £1091 to Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – A small entry of prime cattle topped at 723kgs, 186.5p or £1348 for a Limousin cross bullocks from Messrs Neill & Sons, Thornington Farm and purchased by Ralph Pearson.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale saw 3260 head come forward for sale. All classes of lambs sold to extreme rates with an overall average of 209.6p (SQQ 213.2p) or £93.29 per head showing a rise on last week.
The sale saw a top price of £121 paid for 40kg lambs which was also the top price per kilo at 302.5p for a sensational pair of Dutch Texels from Master Elliot Metcalfe, High Old Shield, Greenhead which sold to Mr A Dawson. A total of 540 lambs or 17.58% of the sale sold in excess of £100 per head.
