At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 6th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 503 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, together with 2380 sheep.
PRIME BULLS – The new year brought a new timetable for the prime bulls, starting at 10.30am. This attracted an entry of 116 bulls forward and ensured a great trade throughout.
Topping the trade at £1911 or 193.5ppk was an exceptional Limousin bull weighing 988kg from Messrs J & JF Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Mid Lothian, selling to Mr Fell.
Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe and a great run of Limousin bulls selling to a top of £1827 or 217ppk for an 840kg bull to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.
The leading the top price per kilo of 235.5ppk was achieved twice by Messrs PJ & ES Rogerson, Mison Gill, with a Limousin and a Blonde bull both selling to Bowland Foods Ltd.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A great show of 352 cast cows were on offer, with all buyers back, keen to purchase cows in numbers. Beef cows averaged 132.7ppk, up 29p on the week.
Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 948kg 169.5ppk or £1667 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais for 986kg, 139.5ppk or £1375 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft run of Limosuin cross cows topped at 857kg, 154.5ppk or £1324 and to 864kg, 143.5ppk or £1239, purchased by Messrs Worsley and Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm run of pure Limousin cows topped at 831kg, 144.5ppk or £1200 to Messrs Worsley.
Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cow, which sold to 898kg, 129.5ppk or £1162 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Burrow, Lodges Farm sold a British Blue heifer to 180.5ppk to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm run of cows topped at 663kg, 173.5ppk or £1150 to Jewitts. Messrs Kearton also sold a Limousin heifer for 174.5ppk to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Mair, Meikleholm run of Limousin cross cows topped at 879kg, 129.5ppk or £1138 to and to 804kg, 144.5ppk or £1129 to Mr Kirkpatrick and to 859kg, 131.5ppk or £1129 to Messrs Roberts and finally to 765kg, 145.5p or £1113 to Messrs Worsley. Messrs Mair also sold a Limousin heifer to 174.5ppk to Les Fell.
A large number of Black and white Cows were on offer, with trade being good for all classes, selling to an average of 98.8ppk, up 3.8p on the week.
Messrs Rome, Fauldie run of cows topped at 931kg, 115.5ppk or £1075 for a Montbelairde cross cow purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank Farm sold a Holstein cross, selling to 805kg, 128.5ppk or £1034 purchased by Dovecote. Messrs Shaw, Crossdyke sold a Holstein cross heifer for 697kg, 147.5ppk or £1021 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Mattinson & Sons, Rosewain Farm sold an Ayrshire cow for 694kg or 146.5ppk or £1016 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Imrie, Harelawhole sold a Holstein cross cow for 802kg, 126.5ppk or £1014 purchased by Dovecote Park. Messrs Baynes & Son, Marleycote Walls sold an Ayrshire cow for 828kg, 122.5ppk or £1014 also to Dovecote Park. Messrs Ogden, Pears Ghyll Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 811kg, 123.5ppk or £1001 again to Dovecote Park. Messrs Chapplehow, High Grounds sold a Holstein cross heifer for 153.5ppk. Messrs Shepherd, Croswnstone Farm sold the top priced Friesian heifer for 149.5ppk.
11 Stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains selling an outstanding Simmental stock bull for 1426kg, 137.5ppk or £1960 to Pickstock. Messrs McKelvey, Burnside sold a Limosuin stock bull for 1015kg, 145.5ppk or £1476 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Steel, Lesson Hall sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 883kg, 148.5ppk or £1311 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

PRIME CATTLE – A good entry of 51 prime steers and heifers were forward, with all classes very easily sold to a days top of £1669.34 for a Limosuin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel, Wigton. The same vendor sold another to £1649.50, both being purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.
Top pence per kilo of 218.5ppk was attained on four occasions, firstly by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie, secondly by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle, and finally by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks.
Heifers were forward in good numbers and were seen to top at £1495.22 from Messrs Graham, Cumdivock, Carlisle. Topping the pence per kilo overall was 227.5ppk being achieved three times, twice by Messrs Story, Newbiggin and once by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton, purchased by King Street Butchers, Alan Jarvis and Pioneer Foods.

PRIME SHEEP – The opening sale of prime and cast sheep were met by an entry of 2380 forward.
Another great show of 2170 prime hoggs recorded an average of 210ppk and an SQQ of 217.2ppk being achieved.
Topping the sale at £122.80 was a pair of exceptional Beltex cross hoggs from JP Graham & Son, The Wreay, Wigton, which sold to Wrights of Boston. Messrs Graham run of hoggs sold to average £116.80.
Top price per kilo was 303.9ppk, paid for a tremendous 38.5kg Texel from Parkhouse Farming Co Ltd, Aikton, Wigton, which sold to Mr A Dawson.
Many vendors averaged in excess of £100 per head, this included a run of 100 47kg hoggs from Anderson Bros, Millriggs, Boreland, averaging £104.18 or 219.2ppk.
Mule hoggs topped at £103.80 for a pen from A & D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Workington, and to 201.9ppk for a pen from Mosscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle.
Suffolks to £110.80 from Messrs Lyle, North Scales, Heads Nook.
