At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 13th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 503 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, together with 2380 sheep.

PRIME BULLS – Once again another good entry of 114 prime bulls were forward were trade held up on a par with the previous week.

Topping the trade at £1791 was a Limousin bull weighing 805kg, 222.5ppk from Messrs TP Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle selling to Messrs Helliwell, Rochdale.

Leading price per kilo of 227.5p was achieved by Messrs RJ & P Mulholland, Great Orton for a tremendous Limousin bull also selling to Messrs Helliwell.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A large show of 394 cast cows were on offer with a good ringside of buyers which ensued that all classes sold to last weeks great trade.

Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse sold a Limousin cross cow for 808kg, 169.5p, £1369 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick; Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold the top price Blonde cross cow for 798kg, 169.5p, £1352 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Cowan, The Ash sold a 32 month old Limousin cross heifer for 622kg, 205.5p, £1278 to James Mather; Messrs Duff & Sons, The Laythes sold the top priced Charolais cow for 825kg, 154.5p, £1274 bought by Messrs Worsley.

Messrs Mather, Beech Bank cows topped at 791kg, 154.5p, £1222 for a Limousin cross bought by Messrs Worsley; Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley sold the top priced Simmental cross cow for 878kg, 137.5p, £1207 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold a pure Limousin cow for 806kg, 149.5p, £1204 to Messrs Worsley.

A mixed show of dairy cows were forward with all classes being in great demand, Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 741kg, 147.5p, £1092 to Pickstocks; Messrs Shepherd, Crownstone sold a Holstein cross cow for 837kg, 127.5p, £1067 to Dovecote Park and Messrs Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 822kg, 129.5p, £1064 also to Dovecote Park.

Messrs Workman, The Beeches sold a Montbeliarde cross heifer for 628kg, 169.5p, £1064 to Les Fell; Messrs Woodman & Son, Hill House sold a Montbeliarde cross for 794kg, 129.5p, £1028 bought by Dovecote Park.

Messrs Wilson, Hardrigg Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 723kg, 141.5p, £1023 to Pickstocks; Messrs Graham & Co, Hillhead sold the top priced Friesian cow for 778kg, 130.5p, £1015 to Charles Kirkpatrick; Messrs Sloan & Co, Ryemuir Farm sold the top priced Ayrshire cow for 762kg, 132.5p, £1009 to Messrs Bowes and Messrs Wilson, South View sold a Holstein cross cow for 828kg, 121.5p, £1006 also to Messrs Bowes.

Young cows and heifers were in great demand, Messrs Workman, Beeches sold a Montbeliarde cross heifer for 169.5p to Les Fell.  Floshes Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 150.5p to Pickstocks.  Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge sold a Holstein cross heifer for 147.5p to Pickstocks. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 147.5p to Pickstocks.  Messrs Dickinson, High House sold a Friesian cow for 144.5p also to Pickstocks.  Messrs Marrs & Sons, Croft Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 144.5p to David Holmes.  Messrs Bulman, Bank House sold Friesian heifers for 144.5p and 141.5p both bought by Les Fell.  Messrs Wilson, Hardrigg Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 141.5p to Pickstocks.

CAST BULLS – A large show of 14 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Airey, Brownchester selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1030kg, 129.5p, £1333 to Charles Kirkpatrick with Messrs Marshall, Auchenleck selling a Limousin stock bull for 946kg, 135.5p, £281 to Pickstocks.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger entry of 60 prime steers and heifers were forward attaining a very good trade once again, top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton attaining £1648.65 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 217.5p was also received by the same vendor.

Heifers were forward in exceptional numbers and quality with a days top of £1643.12 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and again purchased by Pioneer Foods.  The same vendor also sold the top Charolais cross at £1488.48.

Top overall pence per kilo of the day was an outstanding British Blue heifer from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton achieving 230.5p and purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool.  Limousin cross heifers from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg attaining 229.5p were purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

PRIME SHEEP – On Monday 13th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep. A smaller show of hoggs saw a great trade yet again with smart export types and well finished hoggs demanding a large premium.

The sale topped at £125.80 for a pen of heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie which sold to Mr G Lomax with the run of heavies from this home averaging £115.51. Topping per kilo at 302.6p was an outstanding pen of 10 Beltex x hoggs from Messrs AG Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie which sold to Mr A Dawson with the run from Castlehill averaging 277.99p per kilo or £109.69 per head. Emily Harryman, Wigton sold a great run of 45kg hoggs to average 257.65ppk (£116.80 per head) to a top of £120.80. Tom & Julia Airey, Dearham sold another great run of Beltex hoggs to average £109.46 to a top of £113.80 with another 3 pens at £112.80.

CAST EWES AND RAMS: On Monday 13th January 2020, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 174 ewes where trade continues to be very strong throughout.  Topping todays sale at £138.50 was a pair of great Texel ewes from R Reid, Bengall Farm; the run from this home sold to average £125.  Once again mules sold fantastically with many selling at £95 plus.  Swales also sold up to £68.50 for a pen of 6 from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell.  More ewes could have been sold to vendors advantage.
