At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 20th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 521 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, together with 3254 sheep.

PRIME BULLS – A similar entry of 113 prime bulls was forward, however selling to an easier trade on the week.

Topping the trade at £1702.45 or 197.5ppk was an 862kg Limosuin from Mr Iain Graham, Rosecastle Farm, Dalston, going to Mr Les Fell.

Messrs Rome, Niven Hill topped the pence per kilo trade at 225.5ppk for a tremendous Limousin bull, following on with others to 218.5ppk and 217.5ppk.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1084.03 or 165.5ppk from Messrs WC Little & Son, Kirkbride House, Kirkbride for a Montbelairde going to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a large show of 358 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to an increased ringside of buyers, ensuring a good trade throughout.

Messrs McKelvey, Burnside sold the top priced Limousin cow for 785kg, 165.5ppk or 31299 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cow, which sold for 957kg, 134.5ppk or £1287 to Mr Sean Mallon. Messrs Houldey, Kirktleton House sold a Simmental cross cow for 753kg, 161.5ppk or £1216 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Mr DA Harrison, Hill House Farm, run of well finished cows topped at 788kg, 153.5ppk or £1209 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Robley, Demesne Farm sold a run of young Limousin cross cows which topped at 183.5ppk, and 180.5ppk to Mr Thomas Fell and Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Callion & Son, Lodge Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow for 902kg, 130.5ppk or £1177 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.

A mixed show of dairy cows were forward with all classes in demand. Messrs Rome, Fauldie run of cows topped at 889kg, 125.5ppk or £1115 for a Montbelairde cross cow purchased by Dovecote Park. Messrs Watson, Millriggs sold a Montbelairde cross cow for 721kg, 153.5ppk or £1106. Messrs slack, Cockley Bank, run of Holstein cross cows topped at 692kg, 155.5pk or £1076, and to 686kg, 149.5ppk or £1025 both to Mr Thomas Fell. Buckabank Farms sold a Holstein cross cow for 918kg, 113.5ppk or £1041 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 877kg, 117.5ppk or £1030 also to Dovecote Park.

Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank sold Holstein cross heifers for 155.5ppk, 149.5ppk to Thomas Fell and to 141.5ppk to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dickinson, High House sold a British Friesian heifer for 148.5ppk to Pickstocks. Burthwaite Farms sold a Holstein cross heifer for 143.5ppk again to Pickstocks. CAST BULLS – A large run of 14 stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge selling the top priced British Blue stock bull for 1101kg, 154.5ppk or £1701 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Common & Son, Crossdykes Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1183kg, 129.5ppk or £1531 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Nixon & Sons, Stotsfold Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1062kg, 141.5ppk or £1502 to Pickstocks. Messrs Crichton, Nether Locharwoods sold a Limousin stock bull for 1060kg, 137.5ppk or £1457 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Neve, Haining House sold a Limosuin stock bull for 1026kg, 141.5ppk or £1451 to Owain Llyr. PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 36 prime steers and heifers were forward achieving a good trade for all classes being sold.

Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle receiving £1642.11, being purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendor sold the top priced British Blue to £1636.74 again purchased by Pioneer Foods. The aforementioned steers also achieved the top pence per kilo of 216.5ppk.

Heifers topped at £1606.74 for a Limosuin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Neil, Upper Tinwald Farm, Dumfries sold the top priced Charolais cross to £1476.83. Top overall pence per kilo of 233.5ppk was attained by Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, Appleby, and was purchased by Alan Jarvis.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw an increased entry of 3242 head forward.

Prime lambs saw another lift on the week to average 214.2ppk (219.9ppk SQQ) All classes of lambs were keenly bid for with the whole entry selling to average £96.80 per head, with large numbers of hill bred lambs forward.

Messrs Little, The Hollands sold a fabulous run of Beltex lambs to a top of £120.30 to Mr A Dawson, with the run averaging £115.85 or 286ppk. This run also included the top priced pence per kilo which sold to 294.5ppk.

Suffolk lambs sold to £114.80 for a great run from Messrs CA Smith, North Boig Farm who made the trip from New Cumnock, Ayrshire, and to 221ppk from JH Hird, West End, Dovenby.

Mule lambs peaked at £108.80 for a pen of heavy lambs from T & AT Bowman, Brampton Fell, Brampton and to 212ppk for a pen of 40kg lambs from TW Armstrong & Son, Broomhills, Longtown.

A special mention must go to Mr Tony, Atkinson, Low Barn, Appleby-In- Westmorland for his final consignment of 135 Texel cross Mules, which sold to £95.56 or 220ppk. Harrison and Hetherington want to thank Tony for his support over the years and wishes him a long and happy retirement.

CAST EWES AND RAMS: The weekly sale of cast sheep saw an entry of 212 forward. Once again all classes of sheep were a cracking trade. Topping the sale at £130.50 were two tremendous Texel ewes from Messrs Hogg, Far Brownrigg. A great consignment of Dutch Texel ewes consigned by Messrs Wood, Well Head Farm sold to average £117. Many more ewes are required to fulfil demand.
