Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 27th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 564 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, together with 2137 prime and cast sheep.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller entry of 96 prime bulls were forward, however a better quality show was on offer, with dairy bred bulls selling to a similar trade and beef up 8p on the week.

Topping the beef section per head was a tremendous Charolais bull from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Ruthwell selling to £1662 to Mr Fell. The top price per kilo was a Limousin bull from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton selling to 220.5ppk also to Mr Fell.

In the dairy section, Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton topped at £1159 for a Montbelairde bull selling to Bowlands Foods, Lancashire. The same bull also topped the pence per kilo at 177.5ppk.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A large show of 395 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to an ever increasing ringside of buyers, ensuring all classes were in great demand.

Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm run of Limosuin cows topped at 936kg, 163.5ppk or £1530 and to 804kg, 166.5ppk £1338 to Owain Llyr and 768kg, 171.5ppk or £1317 to Sean Mallon. Messrs Scott, Bolton Hall sold a Limosuin cross cow for 936kg, 157.5ppk or £1474 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Capstick, Whicham Hall Farm sold a Limosuin cross cow for 816kg, 168.5ppk or £1374 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold the top priced British Blue cow which sold for 913kg, 149.5ppk or £1364. Messrs Goldie South Bowerhouse sold the top priced Charolais cow for 972kg, 133.5ppk or £1397 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bell, Woodhall Farm run of cows topped at 838kg, 151.5ppk or £1269 to Mr Kirkpatrick, and to 695kg, 167.5ppk or £1164 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Hyslop, Maryfield sold a Limosuin cross heifer for 172.5ppk to Pickstocks. Messrs Graham & Co, Hillhead sold a Charolais cross heifer for 169.5ppk to Jewitts. H & K Farms run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 816kg, 147.5ppk or £1203 to Steven Bowes.

A large show of 260 dairy bred cows were forward with buyers for all classes ensuring a great trade.

Messrs Harrison & Sons, Crossrigg Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at1039kg, 105.5ppk or £1096 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths run of Holstein cross cows topped at 861kg, 125.5ppk or $!080 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Down Hall sold a Hosltein cross cow for 940kg, 114.5ppk or £1076 to Pickstocks. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm run of Hosltein cross cows topped at 912kg, 116.5ppk or £1062 and to 809kg, 124.5ppk or £1007 both going to Dovecote Park. Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 846kg, 121.5ppk or £1027 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Fisher & Co, Geltside Fam sold a Holstein cross heifer for 148.5ppk. Evening Hill Farms run of Holstein cross heifers sold to 143.5p, 136.5p, 135.5p, 134.5 (x2), 133.5p. Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 143.5p. CAST BULLS – A small show of 9 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Millar & Son, Woodhousehill selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1349kg, 147.5p or £1989 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME CATTLE – A much larger entry of 64 prime bullocks and heifers were forward, with all plainer cattle selling dearer on the week, however good quality cattle slightly less.

Top overall was a superb British Blue cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Botel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousins sold to £1597.24 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie again purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 218.5ppk was also attained by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown and purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Friesian steers from Messrs Robinson, Gelt Hall, Brampton topped at £1343.88 and purchased by Les Fell.

Heifers peaked at £1673.44 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Egremont. Top overall pence per kilo of 224.5ppk was paid to Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle for a Limosuin and was purchased by King Street Butchers.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw an entry of 2137 head forward.
Prime hoggs sold to a fabulous demand with all weights, types and grades a flying trade resulting in the sale averaging 223.9p (SQQ 229.8p) which equated to £100.74 per head. The sale saw a top of £126.30 for a great pen of Texel x heavies from Messrs Reid, Bengall Farm, Lockerbie which sold to John Worsley. The run from Bengall sold to average £119.36 a head. Marcus Pieri, Stonehouse, Brampton sold a cracking run of hoggs to top the market per kilo at 303.1p which sold to Robert Skelton.

Mule hoggs sold to average £93.88 or 205ppk to a top of £100.50 from M & A Donald, Denton Mains, Brampton and to 215.3p for a pen from RI & VA Telford, High Park Foot, Roadhead. Hill hoggs sold to £100.80 for a pen of Scotch Blackface from Messrs Dixon, Stobbs, Rochester and to 222.5p for Cheviots from AG Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie. Suffolks sold to £111.80 from Messrs Bouch, Copperthorns, Kirkoswald and to 231.8p from Messrs Brough, Clappers, Wigton. Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

CAST EWES AND RAMS: A larger show of 220 ewes and rams were forward. Trade was considerably dearer on the week, achieving an overall average of £90.

Topping the trade at £144.50 was a cracking Texel ewe from Mr Brough, The Croft, Blackford. Blackfaced ewes sold to £87.50 and Swaledales to £76.50 all from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown.

Once again larger numbers of ewes are required to fulfil demand.
