At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 3rd February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, which had a larger entry of 522 on offer.
PRIME BULLS – A total of 121 prime bulls were forward and met with a steadier trade on the week. Topping the sale was a Simmental bull courtesy of J & R Gracey, Moss Side of Gight, Fyvie selling for £1641.50 to Mr Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Limousin bulls were bid to £1613.15 from Messrs TW Hunter, Upper Brydekirk and selling to Mr Les Fell. Blondes sold to £1534.16 from Messrs Wilshaw, Wigton also selling to Les Fell. Topping the pence per kilo was a British Blue from TW Hunter selling for 224.5ppk and again purchased by Les Fell. Limousin bulls topped at 217.5p from IT & ICF Carruthers, Canonbie. A good ringside of buyers were forward and trade was consistent throughout.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a good entry of 338 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to an ever increasing ring side of buyers ensuring a sharper trade on the week.
Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow for 842kg, 174.5ppk or £1469 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 767kg, 165.5ppk or £1269 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside sold a Limousin cross heifer for 563kg, 221.5ppk or £1247 to Rob Medcalf. DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of cows topped at 722kg, 171.5ppk or £1238 to Mr Sean Mallon. Messrs Hall, Lannerton sold a Limousin cross cow for 660kg, 187.5ppk or £1237 to Steve Bowes. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm sold a Limosuin cow for 825kg, 147.5ppk or £1216 purchased for Messrs Worsley.
All classes of dairy cows were in great demand with Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank run of British Friesian cows topped at 910kg, 125.5ppk or £1142 and to 777kg, 127.5ppk or £990 both purchased by Dovecote Park. Messrs Wilson, Hardrigg Hall sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 837kg, 128.5p or £1075 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hunter, Stoneraise Place run of cows topped at 706kg, 143.5ppk or £1013 for a Fleckvieh cross cow purchased by Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Crossrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 725kg, 139.5ppk or £1011 to Pickstocks. Messrs Hall, Prior Hall run of Friesian cows topped at 802kg, 124.5ppk or £999 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank sold a Holstein cross heifer for 727kg, 136.5ppk or 3992 to Les Fell. PRIME CATTLE – A farm larger entry of 63 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling sharper on the week.
Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton receiving £1649.24 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1640.93 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle, and Bazadaise to £1573.50 from Messrs Robinson, Gelt Hall Farm, Brampton.
Top pence per kilo steer sold to 216.5ppk was attained twice both from Messrs Story, Newbigging, Carlisle.
Heifers from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport achieved a top of £1490.41 and £1453.09 purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Story, Newbigging sold another to £1453.03. British Blues from Messrs Pearson, sold to £1374.53. Top pence per kilo and overall top was a Limosuin cross from Messrs Wilson, Peteril Hill, Carlisle achieving 231.5ppk and was purchased by David Whaite.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of Prime and Cast sheep trade remained fairly stable on the week, however a poor show in terms of finish and quality was apparent, nevertheless another flying trade for all classes with a sale average of £101.97.
Heavy lambs sold to extreme rates, with many selling to 230ppk and beyond, also to a top of £125.80 for a fantastic pen of Texel hoggs from A & JM Forster, Weary Hall Style, Wigton which sold to Mr Robert Skelton. Messrs Dempster, Castle Hill, Lockerbie sold a run of sensational Beltex hoggs to a top of 320ppk selling to Mr A Dawson.
Tom & Julia Airey, New Grange, Dearham sold their run of Beltex hoggs to average £115.94 and to a top of £122.80. Suffolk hoggs topped at £113.80 for a pen of 12 from Paul Bouch, Copperthorns, Penrith.
Mules were a flyer and sold to a top of £108.80 for a pen of 15 from Bromfield Farms, Wigton and to a top of 230ppk for a pen of 45kg hoggs which sold to £103.50 from Mr Neil Marston, Millstone Moor, Cockermouth.
