At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 10rd February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, which had a smaller entry of 395 on offer.
PRIME BULLS – A slightly smaller show of 85 bulls forward which were met with a much sharper trade on the week. Topping the sale was a British Blue bull from H&S Maudsley, Settle selling for 232.5p to Mr Les Fell. Limousins were bid to 227.5ppk from JW & DN Eve, Wigton selling to Mr Michael Helliwell. Topping the price per head was a Limousin selling to £1991.13 from AL Campbell, Lanark selling to Mr Michael Helliwell. British Blues were bid to £1778.63 from Messrs Maudsley, Settle and Charolais from H Goldie, Ruthwell topped at £1763.58.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A smaller show of 395 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with a keen ringside of buyers which ensured a flying trade for all classes.
Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 861kg at 177.5p totalling £1528 and 960kg at 143.5p totalling £1377 and 941kg at 144.5p totalling £1359 bought by Les Fell and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank Farm sold the top price Limousin cow for 894kg at 169.5p totalling £1515 bought for Messrs Worsley.
Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm’s run of outstanding cows topped at 849kg at 165.5p totalling £1405 for a Blonde x cow bought by Owain Llyr and 699kg at 189.5p totalling £1324 for a British Blue x bought by Sean McGimpsey. Mr David Story, Greenburn sold two outstanding Charolais cows for 882kg at 158.5p totalling £1397 and 789kg at 176.5p totalling £1392 bought by Mr Roberts and Owain Llyr. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin x cow for 799kg at 163.5p totalling £1306 to Charles Kirkpatrick and 668kg at 183.5p totalling £1225 to Sean McGimpsey. H&K Farms’ run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 876kg at 147.5p totalling £1292 and 906kg at 138.5p totalling £1254 to Charles Kirkpatrick
All classes of dairy cows were in great demand with well fleshed dairy cows selling for 125ppk and upwards, middle class cows selling for 105-118ppk and plain cows for 85-95ppk. Messrs Holliday, Newbampton sold the top price Holstein x cow for 842kg at 131.5p totalling £1107. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Downhall sold a Holstein x cow for 742kg at 148.5p totalling £1101 and 819kg at 134.5p totalling £1101 bought by Alan Jarvis and Steven Bowes. PRIME CATTLE – A very good show of 58 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling to a similar trade to that of last week. Top overall was paid to Messrs L Skelton, Low House, Maryport for a superb Limousin cross heifer, receiving £1644.06 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold another to £1518.94. Top overall pence per kilo of 226.5ppk was attained by Messrs Story, Newbiggin and was purchased by Mr David Whaite.
Steers sold to a top of £1615.86 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blues to £1562.99 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 219.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Story, Newbigging for a Limousin cross.

PRIME HOGGS – On Monday 10th February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep. Storm Ciara had an effect on numbers forward, however, those who braved the storm were royally rewarded with the dearest returns seen this season. The overall average was 246.7p (£110.85 per head) SQQ 253.78p.
Heavy hoggs regularly traded at 240p and beyond to a top of £148 for Texels shown by GJ Toppin, Basco Dyke, Armathwaite which sold to Mr G Lomax. Smart, export lambs regularly achieved 300p and beyond to 312.2p for exceptional Beltex x from A & A Little, The Hollands, Penton purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Mule hoggs sold to £115.80 from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Raughton Head and to 242.4p for a pen of 42kg hoggs from Messrs Beverly, Birtley Shields, Hexham. Hill hoggs topped at £111.80 for a pen of Cheviots from AG Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie which were also the top per kilo at 260p.

CAST SHEEP: A smaller show of cast ewes and rams were forward this week, however all classed were in high demand. Topping the day’s trade at £141.50 was a pair of Dutch Texel ewes from Messrs Johnston, Springfield, followed by Messrs Graham, Ashdene selling a pure Texel ewe to £140.50.
Hill bred sheep continue to sell well, with a pen of 19 Swaledale ewes from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell selling to £62.50.
Cast rams was an increase in trade, with a Leicester from Messrs Murray, Branch End selling to £119.50.
