Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 17th February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 465 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, which had an entry of 2210 prime sheep on offer.

PRIME BULLS – The weekly sale of prime bulls had a great entry of 90 forward, with all classes selling to a dearer trade on the week.

Topping the sale at £1886.36 was a tremendous British Blue from Mr Hall, Ainstable, selling to Mr Helliwell, Rochdale. Mr Hall’s fantastic run of bulls averaged a staggering £1685.48. Limousin bulls from Messrs Thomlinson, Park View sold to £1732.62 also to Mr Helliwell.

Dairy bred bulls topped at £1154.30 for a British Friesian from T & M Irving, Canonbie selling to Mr Howard.

Topping the pence per kilo was a British Blue selling to 235.5ppk from Mr Brian Hall, followed by Messrs Thomlinson with Limousins to a top of 215.5ppk.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a good entry of 331 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a keen ringside of buyers, ensuring a sharper trade.

Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall run of cows topped at 816kg, 169.5ppk or £1383 and to 749kg, 160.5ppk or £1202 for Limosuin crosses to Mr Sean Mallon. Messrs Teasdale, Kellah sold a Limosuin cross cow for 853kg, 157.5ppk or £1343 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot run of Limousin cows topped at 765kg, 163.5p or £1250 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm sold a Limosuin cows to 652kg, 184.5ppk or £1202 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Hall & Son, Barker House sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 812kg, 144.5ppk or £1173 again to Mr McGimpsey.

A mixed show of Black and white cows were on offer with all classes being sharper on the week to average an amazing 110.9ppk.

Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank run of Holstein cross cows topped at 771kg, 145.5ppk or £1121 to Mr David Holmes. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein cross cow for 873kg, 127.5ppk or £1113 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Edgar, Whitecroft Mains sold Holstein cross cows, topping at 814kg, 136.5ppk or £1111 and to 838kg, 128.5ppk or £1076 both to Mr Les Fell. Mr Colin Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 843kg, 131.5ppk or £1108 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Graham, Manor House sold a Holstein cross cow for 862kg, 128.5ppk or £1107 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Harrington & Sons, Downhall sold a Holstein cross cow for 796kg, 136.5ppk or £1086 to Mr Kirkpatrick. CAST BULLS – A good show of 11 stock bulls were forward, with Messrs Austin, Upper Portrack selling the top priced Montbelairde to 1241kg, 112.5ppk or £1396 to Pickstocks. Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm sold a Limousin bull for 946kg, 147.5ppk or £1395 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Wilson, Old Church Farm sold a Limosuin stock bull for 833kg, 167.5ppk or £1395 purchased by Messrs Chester.

PRIME CATTLE – A very good show of 56 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes selling sharper on the week, and selling to a day’s top of £1700.84 followed by £1678.75 for two outstanding Limousin cross steers from Messrs N Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais crosses from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie achieved £1463.58. Top pence per kilo of 218.5ppk was received by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle, purchased by Mr David Whaite, Blackpool.

Heifers peaked at £1481.85 from Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais crosses from Messrs Gate, Brackendene, Cockermouth sold to £1345.64and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. British Blues from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton sold to £1323.69 and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Corby Hill Butchers. Top overall pence per kilo of 236.5ppk for a Limosuin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle purchased by Mr Les Fell, Settle. Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton sold another to 230.5ppk also purchased by Les Fell.

PRIME HOGGS – The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw a larger entry of 2039 head forward. This included nearly 800 horned and mule types, another exceptional trade was witnessed with a sale average of £110.91 a head.

Heavy hoggs were again flying with many pens at £130 and beyond to a top of £140.80 for a great pair of Texel x lambs from AJ & LJ Haston, Dearham Hall, Cockermouth with their run of heavies averaging £135.31 a head. A shortage of best grade export weight sheep was evident, these sold to top the trade per kilo at 317.5p for some sensational Beltex hoggs from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, Roweltown. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald sold sheep in Carlisle for the first time in decades bringing a top run of heavy hoggs to level at £133.44 a head. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown sold their first run of Blackfaced hoggs to top at £120 a head for 49.5kg and 251.3p for 42.5kg to average £112.09. Mule hoggs sold to a great demand with the sale averaging £108.98 to a top of £123.80 from Messrs Hunter, Stoneraise who sold a run of 300 to average £110.15. Suffolk hoggs sold to a top of £129.80 for heavies from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.

CAST SHEEP: Once again trade continues to be exceptional for all classes of sheep.  Topping todays sale at £142.50 was an outstanding Texel ewe from Messrs Gargett, Bon Vista with another from the same home selling at £140.50.  Mule ewes also sold exceptionally well, regularly selling for £95 plus.  Blackfaced ewes sold up to £94.50 and Swaledales up to £73.50.  More ewes could be easily sold.
