Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 24th February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Which included an entry of 374 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, and 1620 prime and cast sheep.

PRIME BULLS – A plainer show of 65 bulls were forward, however all classes sold much sharper with dairy bred bulls up 12p on the week.

Topping the sale was a Limosuin bull from Messrs JW & DN Eve, Stubbsgill, Wigton selling for £1869.13 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold a British Blue to £1660.28 to Mr Helliwell, Rochdale. Topping the pence per kilo was a British Blue from Messrs Osborne, Wigton, selling to 235ppk.

Dairy bred bulls were a superb trade, with A & L Gott, Prospect House, Cockermouth selling a Holstein to £1192.75. Messrs Nelson, Braithwaite Hall, Ivegill sold two British Friesian bulls to 177.5ppk each.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A good show of 265 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to a large ring side of buyers ensuring a flying trade once again.

Messrs Paul & Son, Greigsland sold the top price Limousin x cow for 833kg at 180.5kg totalling £1503 to Sean Mallon. Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley sold the top priced Charolais cow for 956kg at 156.5p totalling £1496 also to Sean Mallon. DA Harrison, Hill House Farm’s run of cows topped at 785kg at 170.5p totalling £1338 for a Blonde x cow bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold a Limousin x cow for 793kg at 168.5p totalling £1336 bought for Messrs Worsley. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm’s Limousin cows sold to 841kg at 154.5p totalling £1299 to Sean Mallon. Messrs Miller & Partners, Crookholm sold a British Blue x cow for 714kg at 174.5p totalling £1245 to Owain Llyr. Mr David Airey, The Close’s cows topped at 725kg at 168.5p totalling £1221 for a Limousin x to Sean Mallon. Messrs Bell, Woodhall Farm’s run of cows topped at 707kg at 172.5p totalling £1219 for a British Blue x to Owain Llyr. Messrs Siddle, Honeypot’s run of cows topped at 880kg at 135.5p totalling £1192 for an Aberdeen Angus cow bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Steen, Coxhill Farm’s Beef Shorthorn cows topped at 707kg at 168.5p totalling £1191 to Les Fell.

A great demand for all classes of Black & White cows. Messrs Messenger, The Howes’ run of Holstein x cows topped at 837kg at 129.5p totalling £1083 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Henderson & Son, Parkhouse Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 848kg totalling £1081, 746kg at 144.5p totalling £1077 and 661kg at 154.5p totalling £1021 bought by Dovecote Park, Eric Hall and Les Fell respectively. Messrs Cannon, Espland Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 867kg at 124.5p totalling £1079 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Rudd, The Grassings Farm’s run of Holstein x sold to 862kg at 119.5p totalling £1030 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Beaty, Newton Field’s run of Holstein x cows sold to 698kg at 145.5p totalling £1015 to David Holmes. Messrs Graham, Greenah Cragg Farm sold a Holstein x cow at 829kg at 121.5p totalling £1007 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge Farm’s Holstein x cows topped at 827kg at 121.5p totalling £1004 to Dovecote Park. CAST BULLS – Only 7 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Evans, Halmyre Farm selling a Limousin stock bull for 1127kg at 138.5p totalling £1560 to Owain Llyr who also bought Messrs Beaty, Newton Field’s Limousin stock bull for 975kg at 146.5p totalling £1428.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 44 prime steers and heifers were forward with all classes being very easily sold. Top overall was a superb quality Limousin cross steer from weekly vendor Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks. Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle sold another to £1604.46 both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1606.74 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle, again purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo steer was 219.5ppk achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle, and secondly by Mr Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.

Heifers were forward in good numbers and peaked at £1418.77 for a marvellous Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle and was purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir, Wigton. Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle sold another to £1397.67. Top overall pence per kilo was again a Limosuin cross from Messrs W Miller, High Aketon, Wigton achieving 228.5ppk, purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool.

PRIME HOGGS – A mixed show of 1525 prime hoggs forward at Carlisle. Well fleshed and best conformation types met a flying trade once again, plainer sorts would be slightly easier on the week. The sale topped at £146.80 for a fantastic pen of heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs GJ Toppin, Basco Dyke, Armathwaite selling to Mr M Lomax with others to £140 from this home. Messrs Little, The Hollands, Penton sold another wonderful run of Beltex hoggs to top the market per kilo at 350p (40kg £140) these were closely followed with 41kg Beltex hoggs at 341.4p from Messrs Hewitt, Cardewlees, Wigton which both sold to Mr M Bowe. The winning pen of Blackfaced lambs sold at £117 and were shown by Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown. The winning of Swaledale hoggs were shown by Messrs Wigham, Coldshields and sold for £93.80.

Topping the trade at £136.50 was a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Palmer, Greensyke.
