At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 2ND March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. This included an entry of 484 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, and 2014 prime and cast sheep.
PRIME BULLS – A much larger entry of 120 bulls were forward, although the offering was a plainer show, trade was dearer on the week. Topping the sale was a British Blue from Messrs MN Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle selling to £1797.03 to Bowland Foods. Simmentals met a fantastic trade with Messrs Lowry, New Steadings Farm, Lanark selling to £1688.40 to Mr Les Fell. British Blues topped the pence per kilo at 243.5ppk from Messrs Jewitt. TW Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan also sold a British Blue to 231.5ppk to Mr Fell.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A larger show of 306 cast cows were forward to a smaller ringside of buyers, however trade was up on the week.
Messrs Stevenson & Son, Lower Langshaw Farm run of cows topped at 950kg, 146.5ppk or £1391 for a Charolais cow, selling to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses run of Charolais cows topped at 756kg, 168.5ppk or £1273 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Coates, Rainscar sold a British Blue cross cow for 719kg, 168.5ppk or £1211 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg Farm sold the top prices Simmental cow for 744kg, 162.5ppk or £1209 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 682kg, 169.5ppk or £1155 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Armour, Milton Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 783kg, 141.5ppk or £1107 again to Mr Fell.
All classes of Dairy cows were in great demand, with Messrs Martin, Tempest tower selling the top priced Holstein cross cow for 862kg, 127.5ppk or £1099 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Jackson & Sons, Lingstubbs Farm sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 806kg, 133.5ppk or £1076 also to Dovecote Park. Bays Leap Dairy Farm run of cows topped at 831kg, 128.5ppk or £1067 for a Swedish Red to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mitchell & Son, Mirkbooth run of Holstein cross cows topped at 875kg, 121.5ppk or £1063 again to Dovecote Park. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 840kg, 125.5ppk or £1054 once again to Dovecote Park.

Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm sold the top prices Limosuin x bullock for 748kg, 209.5ppk or £1567 also to Pioneer Foods. Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm sold a Limousin cross bullock for 757kg, 203.5ppk or £1540 again to Pioneer Foods, and a Limousin x heifer for 666kg, 216.5pk or £1441 to Blackbrow Abattoir. PRIME HOGGS – A mixed show of 1788 prime hoggs forward at Borderway, with 38% of these being hill bred lambs and Mules. Trade was very similar on the week with heavy hoggs seen to be sharper once more. The sale topped at £151 for a pair of outstanding heavy hoggs shown by Messrs Toppin, Basco Dyke, Penrith which sold to Mr G Lomax. Topping the pence per kilo at 311.7ppk was a fabulous pen of Beltex from Messrs A & A Little, Hollands, Penton, which sold to Mr A Dawson. Hill hoggs sold to £118.80 for a cracking pen of Cheviots from Messrs W & ME Paisley, Micklethwaite Farm, Wigton and to 247.4ppk again for Cheviots from Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie. CAST EWES & RAMS – A larger show of cast ewes and rams were forward. Trade for all classes was exceptional and averaged £100.50 for all types. Topping the trade was a staggering £187.50 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Brough, The Croft. Suffolk ewes from the same home also sold to £182.50, and Mules sold to £137.50 from Messrs Beaty, Stonewalls. Pens of Swaledales sold to £93.50, and £90 from Messrs Fisher, Reaygarth.
Rams took the greatest lift on the week, selling to £144.50 for a Texel from Messrs Toppin, Basco Dyke, and a Leicester ram to £143.50. Rams averaged £126 for all classes.
Many more prime and cast sheep are required, with the ringside of buyers increasing, vendors are encouraged to take advantage of the outstanding trade.
