Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 9th March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. This included an entry of 412 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, and a smaller show of 1653 prime and cast sheep.

PRIME BULLS – A total of 95 bulls were forward and were met by a fantastic trade, with all classes selling much dearer on the week.

Limousins from Messrs J Logan, Humebyres, Kelso sold to a top price of £1886.85 to Mr Les Fell. A number of Limosuin bulls were present, selling to a total breed average of £1389. Top price British Blue from Messrs Airey, Otterburn sold to £1540.50 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs GL Hutton, Setmabanning Farm, Keswick topped the pence per kilo at 225.5ppk with a Limousin to Mr Helliwell.

In the dairy section a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Gott, Prospect House, Cockermouth sold to £1195.47. Messrs AS & CE Coulthard, Justicetown sold a Holstein Friesian to a top of 187.5ppk.

Many more bulls could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A good show of 245 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with beef cows selling sharper on the week. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold two outstanding British Blue cross cows for 894kg, 184.5ppk or £1949 and to 789kg, 188.5ppk or £1487 both to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley sold the top priced Charolais cow for 868kg, 156.5ppk or £1358 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Brown, Wilson Park Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 807kg, 167.5ppk or £1351 to Owain Llyr. DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of cows topped at 780kg, 169.5ppk or £1322 for a British Blue cross again to Owain Llyr. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold the top priced Parthanaise cow for 747kg, 167.5ppk or £1251 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe sold the top priced pence per kilo Limousin cow for 181.5ppk to Owain Llyr. Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse sold a British Blue cross cow for 178.5ppk yet again to Owain Llyr. DA Harrison sold the top priced pence per kilo Aberdeen Angus cow for 170.5ppk to Steven Bowes.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with well fleshed cows selling less on the week, however plainer cows would be sharper. Messrs Bowe, Chalklodge’s run of Holstein cross cows topped at 877kg, 125.5ppk or £1100 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Grave, Elephant Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 860kg, 124.5ppk or £1070 also to Les Fell. Messrs Threlkeld, Bailey Town Friesian cows topped at 772kg, 136.5ppk or £1053 to Mr David Holmes. Messrs Workman, The Beeches sold the top priced Montbelairde cross cow for 757kg, 136.5ppk or £1033 to Pickstocks. Messrs Byers & Son, Woodslee sold a British Friesian heifer for 692kg, 146.5ppk or £1013 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Greenup, Crosshill sold a Holstein cross heifer for 147.5ppk to Steven Bowes.

CAST BULLS: A small show of 6 stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Gaitskell, High Field sold an Aberdeen Angus bull for 1031kg, 117.5ppk or £1211 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Brown & Co, Little Culmain Farm sold a Limousin bull for 870kg, 138.5ppk or £1204 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME CATTLE – A massive entry of 72 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling far sharper on the week. Achieving a day’s top of £1638.91 was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle, purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, sold the top priced British Blue cross to £1557.63 and Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold the top Blonde cross to £1514.55. Top pence per kilo steer came from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle attaining 224.5ppk for a Limosuin cross.

Heifers were forward in exceptional quality and numbers. Topping at £1413.58 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport, purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle sold another to £1404.83 and was purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir, Wigton.

Top overall pence per kilo of 229.5ppk was received by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle, and was purchased by Mr David Whaite, Blackpool. Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton sold another to 227.5ppk again purchased by David Whaite.

PRIME HOGGS – A smaller show of 1469 hoggs saw a rise of 9p on the week to average 244p (SQQ 249p) with large runs of Mule and Hill sheep forward, this resulted in a price per head average of £110.83.

The sale topped at £143.80 twice for Texel hoggs shown by Messrs Robinson, Burtholme and Messrs Bell, New Hall. Smaller export types were in demand to a top per kilo pf 320p for Beltex hoggs from Messrs McCune, Farewell Grange, Mule hoggs averaged £105.20 to a top of £121.80 for Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton to 234.7p for another pen from the same home.

Blackfaced hoggs averaged £106.99 to a top of £114 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 248.9p from the same vendor. Cheviot hoggs averaged £108.79 and sold to £120.80 for a pen from Messrs Paisley, Micklethwaite Farm, Wigton and to 255.8p from Messrs Fell, Harley Croft, Wigton.

CAST EWES & RAMS – A larger show of 184 ewes met a trade nothing short of phenomenal with several lots selling for over £200 to a top of £215 for a pair of Texels from Messrs Holliday, New Bampton, Carlisle.

The sale average was £120.30. Suffolks averaged £149.13! Texels averaged £148.96. Tups sold to £171.50 for Bluefaced Leicesters from Messrs Ogden, Pears Gill. Messrs Hornsby, The Stackyard, Wigton sold ewes to £210 to average £189. Suffolk ewes sold to £201.50 from Messrs Atkinson, The Gill, Wigton. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston sold a great run of ewes to average £181.56 to a top of £181.56. Mule ewes averaged £115.19 to a top of £126.50 for a pen of 13 from Messrs Graham, Wallhead.
