At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 16th March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. An increased entry of 500 cast cows & bulls and prime cattle, and a larger show of 2288 prime and cast sheep were forward.
Also held this day was the annual show and sale of Primestock cattle on behalf of the North West Limousin and Border Blue Club, which was expertly judge by Mr Michael & Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. (See Separate Report)
PRIME BULLS – The weekly sale of prime bulls had an entry of 107 forward and were met with a buoyant trade throughout, with all classes easier to sell.
Out with the show, Messrs FJ Wight, Carwood Farm, Biggar sold a tremendous run of Charolais bulls topping at £1649, and Messrs IT & KF Carruthers, Glenzierfoot Farm, Canonbie sold a consignment of Blonde bulls to a top of £1571. Messrs Carruthers sold another Blonde bull to 215.5ppk.
Dairy bred bulls topped at 188.5ppk twice from Messrs White, Steel Hall and Messrs Dickinson, High House.
Many more bulls could have been sold to vendors advantage.

Swarland Farms’ British Blue cows sold for 854kg at 213.5p totalling £1823 and 928kg at 186.5p totalling £1730 both bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Skirwith Hall Farms sold a British Blue cow for 836kg at 208.5p totalling £1743 to Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm sold a British Blue cow for 1001kg at 169.5p at £1710 to Charles Kirkpatrick. PRIME HOGGS – The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw an increased entry of 1963 head forward. All classes saw a rise on the week to average 261ppk this was achieved with 798 (40.6%) mule and hill breeds included. Heavy hoggs were in great demand and topped £190 a head for a Charollais hogg from Messrs Sutherland, Bogrie, Canonbie. Heavy hoggs saw over 300p per kilo on several occasions to 311p for 59kg Texels from Messrs Rust, Denton Crescent, Low Row totalling £183.50. Messrs Rust sold his run of heavy hoggs to average 62.8kg at 277.5p totalling £174.32 per head. Topping per kilo at 344.5p were an exceptional pen of Beltex hoggs from Messrs Little, Hollands, Penton Mule hoggs sold to £150.80 for heavies from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hills, Distington and to 259.3p for a pen from Messrs Little, Hollands. Hill hoggs sold to £129.80 for a pen of 15 Blackies from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown who also sold a pen of 30 at 271.6p.

CAST EWES & RAMS – The weekly sale had a larger show of 320 cast sheep forward, and averaged a staggering £125 for all classes, with over 20 lots selling over £200 per head, and 15 lots over £230.
Ewes sold to a centre record of £285 for a cracking pure Texel ewe from Messrs Jones, The Croft. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop sold a pen of Texel ewes to £270 and averaged £244 for the consignment.
Dutch Texel ewes sold to £240 from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, with Beltex to £250 from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House. Also from this home was a consignment of mules, selling to £168, and a pen of Herdwicks to £98.
Charollais sold to £240 form Messrs Trafford, Springfield. Messrs Atkinson, Gill Farm sold Suffolk crosses to £230. Cheviot Mules to £200 from Messrs Dixon & Chappelhow, Westfield, and finally Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £102 twice. Firstly from Messrs Richardson, Sheepriggs, and secondly by Messrs Wigham, Hargill House.
Cast rams saw a huge raise in demand also, selling to a top of £208 from Messrs Dixon, Westfield House Farm.
