At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 18th May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a great show of 480 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger entry of 98 prime bulls forward with all handier, well fleshed types easily sold. Heavier bulls were better on the week. Top overall at £1730 was a Limousin from Messrs D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Logan, Humebyres, Kelso sold another Limousin to £1637 and Redpath Farms, Kelso sold one at £1630. British Blues sold to £1677 from Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall, Fife purchased by Bowland Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 216.5p was attained by Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall. 213.5p for a Limousin cross from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Black and whites sold to £1179 from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton and purchased by Bowland Foods Preston. Top pence per kilo of 179.5p was paid to Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A large show of 325 cast cows and stock bulls were forward and met with a sharper trade for all classes. Messrs Armstrong, High Tarns Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 894kg at 211.5p totalling £1890 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall’s run of cows topped at 742kg at 190.5p totalling £1413 also bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Hutchinson, Bail Hill sold a Limousin x cow for 679kg at 187.5p totalling £1273 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Common & Son, Crossdykes Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 843kg at 149.5p totalling £1260 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin x cow for 792kg at 155.5p totalling £1231 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Oliver, Cawfields sold a Limousin x heifer for 191.5p to Thomas Fell.

All classes of black and white cows were in great demand averaging 108.7ppk which was up 7.9p on the week. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall selling a Holstein x heifer 768kg at 151.5p totalling £1163 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Paul & Son, Greigsland sold a Holstein x heifer for 731kg a 152.5p totalling £1114 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Watson, Millrigg sold a Holstein x cow for 890kg at 123.5p totalling £1099 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold a Holstein x cow for 911kg at 115.5p totalling £1052 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced Friesian cow for 816kg at 127.5p totalling £1040 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Robinson & Son, Gelt Hall Farm sold a Friesian cow for 743kg at 136.5p totalling £1014 to Les Fell. Messrs Reed, Croft House sold Friesian heifers for 152.5p and 144.5p.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 66 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a good level trade. Top overall was a Limousin x steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith who attained £1594 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle sold another to £1535 and was again purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blues sold to £1509 for Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton. Top pence per kilo of 218.5p was attained by Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport for a Limousin x purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Heifers peaked at £1569 for a Limousin x from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont and purchased by Messrs Wharton, Blackbrow Abattoir, Wigton. Another Limousin sold to £1551 from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby purchased by Owain Llyr. The same vendor also sold top price British Blue x to £1505 again purchased by Owain Llyr. Charolais sold to £1449 from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and top overall pence per kilo of 235.5p was received by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton and purchased by Mullholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep comprised of 747 spring lambs, 422 prime hoggs and 190 cast ewes. A fabulous entry of 747 spring lambs sold to average 275ppk, with many sailing past 300ppk. Lambs from 30kg upwards all met plenty of interest, to a top of £132 for a beautiful pair of Beltex from Messrs Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton, which also topped per kilo at 330p to Mr Helliwell. Also at £132 was an outstanding lamb from Seymour Farms, Wigton, again to Mr Helliwell.

A large company of vendors from the the deep west of Cumbria, brought forward several lots of quality lambs, these topped at £127 from Messrs Sharp, Holmecroft Farm, Beckermet.

Light lambs also sold to extreme rates with a run of 35kg lambs from Messrs Bell, Low Houses averaged £109.35 (304.17ppk). Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold a run of 39.5ppk lambs to average £124.14 (313.72ppk).
