Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 25th May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where once again a large show of 345 cast cows bulls and prime cattle were forward on Bank Holiday Monday with all classes being up on the week.

PRIME BULLS: A very good entry of 94 prime bulls forward achieving an excellent trade throughout. Top overall was a British Blue from Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle who attained £1817 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais from Messrs Wight, Carwood, Biggar sold to £1439 again purchased by Bowland Foods. Limousins sold to £1409 from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top overall pence per kilo of 219.5p was achieved twice firstly by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton with a Limousin cross purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale and secondly by Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Dairy bred bulls sold to a top of £1185 from Messrs Mitchinson, Beckstones Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor, the same vendors sold the top price per kilo of 183.5p. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: All classes of cast cows well up on the week. Mr G Brough, Old Rectory Farm sold a Limousin cow for 618kg at 182.5p totalling £1242 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm’s run of cows topped at 660kg at 180.5p totalling £1191 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Tiffin & Sons, Wham Head Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 850kg at 137.5p totalling £1168 to Messrs Blakey. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold the top priced Simmental x cow for 715kg at 161.5p totalling £1154 and 726kg at 156.5p totalling £1136 bought by Owain Llyr and Bill Howard respectively. Also from the same good home a Limousin x cow sold for 777kg at 145.5p totalling £1130. Messrs Furlong & Co, Ridley Farm sold a Simmental cow for 808kg at 140.5p totalling £1135 to Robert Walls. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm’s run of cows topped at 758kg at 147.5p totalling £1118 to Messrs Blakey. Messrs Sloan, Riggheads sold an Aberdeen Angus cow for 782kg at 141.5p totalling £1106 to Thomas Fell.

Colin Horsley, Whitrigg Grange’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 906kg at 129.5p totalling £1173 to Messrs Blakey. Messrs Haston, Dearham Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 834kg at 137.5p totalling £1146 also to Messrs Blakey. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein x cow for 860kg at 127.5p totalling £1096 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Harrington, Flatt Bank sold a Holstein x cow for 845kg at 125.5p totalling £1060 to Blakey. Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 764kg at 135.5p totalling £1035. CAST BULLS: A good show of 7 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Longlands, Tone Hall Farm selling a Charolais stock bull for 1160kg at 146.5p totalling £1699. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm sold the top priced British Blue for 977kg at 159.5p totalling £1558. Messrs Goddard, Frankstown Farm sold a Maine-Anjou bull for 1114kg at 138.5p totalling £1542 with all the above purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Cockburn & Partners sold a Charolais bull for 1025kg at 146.5p totalling £1501 to Messrs Kirkpatrick.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 43 prime steers and heifers forward due to the Bank Holiday Monday. Less quality on offer but trade remains very firm and many more could have been sold to vendors advantage. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle achieving £1613 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Smithson, Bloan, Kirkby Stephen sold the top price British Blue x for £1462 again purchased by Pioneer Foods this steer was also top pence per kilo at 213.5p.

Heifers peaked at £1550 from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands Farm, Maryport for a superb Limousin x and this was purchase by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont sold one to £1479 and Messrs Pearson sold another to £1475 purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool. Top overall pence per kilo of 234.5p was received by High Plasket Lands Farm for the aforementioned Limousin cross. This was closely followed by 233.5p for Messrs Steel, Steely Farm, Bishop Auckland purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top British Blue x heifer came from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton attaining 225.5p and purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool. Please ensure all prime cattle are in by 10.30am on morning of sale.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime sheep had an entry of 824 prime lambs, 162 prime hoggs ad 204 cast ewes and rams forward.

Another good turnout of spring lambs saw best sorts in short supply. Well fleshed lambs maintained recent rates with commercial types less on the week. Plenty lambs selling to 280-300ppk. Topping this section at £135 was a fantastic 47kg Beltex lamb from Seymour Farms, Leegate, Wigton, which sold to Mr Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Topping the pence per kilo at 316.7ppk was a fabulous Beltex lamb shown by Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Swarland which weighed 36kg and sold to £114 to Mr Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Procter also sold a pen of seven 35kg Beltex lambs to £109 to Mr Robert Skelton.

Hoggs met a great late season demand and sold to £124 for a pen of three 49kg Beltex from Messrs Rodgers, Comlongan Mains, Dumfries, these also topped the pence per kilo at 250.5ppk.
