Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 1st June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where once again a large show of 498 cast cows bulls and prime cattle, along with 1620 prime and cast sheep were forward.

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 115 prime bulls forward with all classes very easily sold. Please ensure bulls are penned by 10.30am on sale day. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie receiving £1839 and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton sold another to £1681 and was purchased by Messrs Helliwell, Rochdale. Simmentals sold to £1522 from Messrs Lowry, New Steadings Farm, Lanark and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Staberlizer crosses from Messrs Allgood, Nunwick Hall, Hexham peaked at £1447 bought by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top overall pence per kilo was 226.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton and purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir. Black and white bulls were very good to sell peaking at £1199 for a Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Bowland Foods. Top pence per kilo of 177.5p was attained by Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

PRIME CATTLE: A similar entry of 58 prime steers and heifers forward achieving a very nice trade throughout. Top overall was Limousin cross steers from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle who attained £1606 and £1605 both purchased by Pioneer Foods for their food stores based in Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1406 from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport this animal was also top steer pence per kilo at 222.5p. Heifers topped at £1581 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands sold the top British Blue cross to £1456 purchased by Les Fell, Settle. Top heifer and overall top pence per kilo of 227.5p was achieved for a British Blue cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: An increased entry of 325 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with extra buyers coming to take advantage of the numbers of cows coming forward, resulting in a sharper trade.

Messrs Mitchinson & Son, High Green Hill sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 825kg, 207.5ppk or £1711 to Mr David Holmes.

Messrs Cameron, Newton Cottage run of outstanding cows topped at 835kg, 174.5ppk or £1479 for a British Blue cow to Owain Llyr, and to 848kg, 174.5ppk or £1479 for a Charolais cross cow to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and to 771kg, 180.5ppk or £1391 for a Limousin cross cow purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley, Woodhall cows topped at 800kg, 176.5ppk or £1412 for a Limousin cross purchased by Owain Llyr.

Messrs Watson, Sanders Close sold a Limousin cow for 843kg, 164.5ppk or £1386 to Les Fell. Ian & Dot Goldie, Greenfield run of cows topped at 926kg, 148.5ppk or £1375 for a Charolais cow to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold at Limousin cow for 731kg, 185.5ppk or £1356 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Edgar, Fell Side Fam run of Limosuin cows topped at 778kg, 169.5ppk or £1318 also to Mr Fell. DA Harrison, Hill House Farm fun of cows topped at 179.5ppk for a Limousin cross purchased by Les Fell.  Messrs Hewitson, King Hill sold a Limosuin cross cow for 177.5ppk and 175.5ppk to Capper Farming and Sean McGimpsey.

All classes of Black and white cows were in great demand with the average being 5.5p up on the week.

Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank run of cows topped at 871kg, 145.5ppk or £1267 for a Holstein cross and to 677kg, 153.5ppk or £1039 for a Holstein cross heifer purchased by Dovecote and Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold a Holstein cross cow for 827kg, 147.5ppk or £1219 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Mallinson, Hallfield sold Holstein cross heifers for 789kg, 151.5ppk or £1195 and to 745kg, 157.5ppk or £1173 both to Mr Fell.

Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh heifer for 691kg, 165.5ppk or £1143 also to Mr Fell, and to 684kg 154.5ppk or £1065 to Alan Jarvis, and finally to 653kg, 158.5ppk or £1035 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 737kg, 152.5ppk or £1123 to Les Fell. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 765kg, 143.5ppk or £1097 again to Les Fell.

Messrs Allan, Glenturk Farm sold a Limosuin stock bull for 1136kg, 134.5ppk or £1527 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Goddard, Frankstown Farm sold the top priced Simmental stock bull for 1192kg, 124.5ppk or £1484 to Pickstocks.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw a fantastic show of 1348 spring lambs forward. The quality on display was a pleasure to sell with a trade to match, levelling at 251.59ppk which was some 15p better than forecast and equates to £104.69 per head. Export lambs saw a flying trade with no fewer than 31 pens of lambs selling in excess of 290ppk, with 24 of these selling to 300ppk and beyond.

Topping the section at £132 was an outstanding pair of Texel cross lambs from Messrs Hetherington, Blue Dial Farm, Allonby, which sold to Mr Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Hetherington’s run of 24 averaged £122.79 for 49kg lambs.

Top pence per kilo of 326.5ppk was paid for a pen of 34kg Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs WC Bell, Low Houses, Brampton which sold at £111 per head to Mr Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Bell sold 22 lambs to average 35.27kg, 302.06ppk or £106.55 per head.

Beltex lambs sold to £129 or 322.5ppk for a cracking single from Messrs Jefferson, Aspatria Hall, to Mr Dawson, and Texels to £127 or 324.3ppk, with the run of 19 averaging 294.39ppk or £118.84 per head.

Closely following at 322.2ppk and 321.1ppk for Beltex from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, whose run of 39 averaged 292.54ppk or £113.60. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold Beltex lambs to 35kg £320 or £113 to Mr Skelton.

Suffolk lambs sold to £120 from Messrs J & M Wilson, Meadow Farm, Camerton which sold to Mr Glen Lomax and to 274.3ppk for and outstanding type from Messrs Allen, Ellerslea, Dalston.

A small quality show of hoggs were forward, selling to £100 for Texels from Messrs Adkin, Upper Rigg.

Cast Ewes and rams topped at £115.50 for a pair from Messrs Sharp, Holmecroft Farm, Beckermet.
