At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 15th June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a smaller show of 472 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 77 prime bulls forward with all classes a very steady trade once again. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Wood, Waters Farm, Penrith receiving £1470 and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top pence per kilo overall was a Limousin at 219.5p from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Black and whites likewise just achieving a steady trade with a top of £1110 for Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top pence per kilo of 168.5p was received for the same animal.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 63 prime steers and heifers forward proving a very good trade throughout. Top overall was a superb Limousin x steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle who received £1665 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold another to achieve £1647. Belted Galloways sold to £1307 purchased by Bill Howard and Holstein Friesians from Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm, Wigton sold to £1206. Top pence per kilo of 223.5p was attained by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake for a Limousin x purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Heifers peaked at £1349 for a quality Limousin x from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool. Galloways sold to £1317 from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth again purchased by David Whaite. Top pence per kilo of 226.5p was achieved by Messrs Morton, Church Farm, Penrith.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a large show of 340 cast cows and stock bulls were forward to a keen ring side of buyers ensuring a great trade again at Carlisle. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of Limousin cows topped at 928kg at 179.5p totalling £1665 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wright & Sons, Midlock Farm sold a British Blue cow for 852kg at 169.5p totalling £1444 also to Charles Kirkpatrick, Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor sold two Charolais cows for 1015kg at 141.5p totalling £1436 and 1048kg at 133.5p totalling £1399 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Carruthers, Silloans’ run of Limousin cows topped at 785kg at 173.5p totalling £1361 and 793kg at 171.5p totalling £1360 purchased by Messrs Roberts and Owain Llyr. Messrs Philipson, Glebe Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 811kg at 165.5p totalling £1342 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Stobart, Gladsmuir sold a Limousin cow for 793kg at 165.5p totalling £1312 to Charles Kirkpatrick and 724kg at 173.5p totalling £1256 bought by Messrs Roberts. Messrs Conlon, Common Carr Farm sold a Limousin cow for 825kg at 158.5p totalling £1307 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Lee & Son, Agars Hill Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 716kg at 182.p totalling £1306 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

A plainer show of black and white cows was on offer with all classes being in great demand. Messrs Harper, West House Farm sold the top price Holstein x cow for 816kg at 143.5p totalling £1170 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Walker, Morton Farm sold the top priced Montbeliarde x cow for 808kg at 141.5p totalling £1143 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Sherwen, Greenmoorside sold a Holstein x cow for 797kg at 141.5p totalling £1127 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Irving, Brunthill sold a Holstein x cow for 820kg at 134.5p totalling £1102 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced Friesian cow for 756kg at 145.5p totalling £1099 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Holliday, Newbampton Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 790kg at 136.5p totalling £1079 to Dovecote Park. CAST BULLS: A large show of 14 stock bulls were on offer on Monday with a great show and trade to match. Messrs Forster, Weary Hall Style sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 947kg at 170.5p totalling £1614 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Mair, Meikleholm Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1027kg at 152.5p totalling £1566 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall sold the top priced Blonde bull for 964kg at 156.5p totalling £1508 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Hiddleston, Park Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 983kg at 143.5p totalling £1410 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Sparke & Son, Little Swinburn Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 877kg at 154.5p totalling £1354 to Owain Llyr. PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale prime lambs saw a slightly smaller show of 1606 forward and once again Carlisle leads the way and produced results far exceeding returns posted mid-week onwards last week. An overall average of 226ppk was achieved with lambs from 28kg-59kg forward. Many vendors brought forward quality consignments of lambs with Messrs Palme, Greensyke, Cockermouth and Messrs Oliver, Whitehouse, Newcastle posting the days leading price per head of £127 for Suffolk and Texel lambs respectively. Top price per kilo was 300p for a tremendous Beltex lamb from Messrs Bowe, Midtown Farm, Wigton. A staggering 99 lots of sheep achieved in excess of £100 a head with 35 of these at £110 and beyond. The first mule lambs of the season came forward from Messrs NC Marston, Millstone Moor, Cockermouth selling 38kg at £82 and a pen of 30 at 34kg for £75.50 (222ppk). Light lambs sold to great demand with commercial types regularly 250-260ppk.
