At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 29th June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a smaller show of 464 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.
PRIME BULLS: An increased entry of 109 prime bulls forward with all classes achieving a good trade throughout. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith receiving £1569 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Another Limousin sold to £1543 for Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm, Keswick purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top overall pence per kilo of 226.5p was again achieved by Messrs Harryman for another Limousin bred bull again purchased by Ralph Pearson.
Black and whites again better to sell than previous weeks and saw a day’s top of £1161 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Mitchinson, Beckstones, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and £1146 for Friesians from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown also purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top pence per kilo was the aforementioned Fleckvieh from Messrs Mitchinson attaining 176.5p and Friesians sold to 163.5p from Messrs Graham purchased by Bowland Foods. PRIME CATTLE: A good show of 51 prime steers and heifers forward maintaining recent high rates. Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie attaining £1652 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle sold another to £1636 again purchased by Pioneer Foods, the same vendor also sold top priced British Blue cross at £1529. Top pence per kilo steer was 219.5p for a Limousin cross from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Hexham purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir. Heifers sold to a top of £1461 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont and £1446 for another from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo overall was a marvellous Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle achieving 233.5p and purchased by David Whaite, Blackpool. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moore run of Limousin cows topped at 868kg, 172.5ppk or £1497 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick, and a 32 month old cow sold to 675kg, 199.ppk or £1346 purchased by Me Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold a Limosuin cow for 837kg, 169.5ppk or £1418 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock House sold the top priced Hereford cow for 879kg, 158.5ppk or £1393 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mathers Beech Bank sold a Limousin cross cow for 796kg, 173.5ppk or £1381 to Les Fell and to 826kg, 164.5ppk or £1358 to Charles Kirkpatrick. All classes of Black and white cows were in great demand, with an average of 1.56ppk up o the week. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold two Holstein cross cows for 845kg, 150.5ppk or £1271 and to 795kg, 150.5ppk or £1196, purchased by Sean McGimpsey and Dovecote Parks. Messrs Wise, Low Tarns sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 729kg, 169.5ppk or £1235 to Les Fell. PRIME SHEEP: Despite the atrocious weather conditions over the weekend, another fantastic show of 2000 prime lambs were forward.
Buyers indicated pre-sale they needed sheep at less money, however the power of the live ring proved its worth again, with an average of 235ppk, being posted for all breeds, wights and grades, to level at £97.51 per head. No less than 168 lots traded at above and beyond £100, with export weight lambs in particular a flying trade.
Beltex lambs led the way both per head and per kilo with the top price of the day per head cam from Messrs Hewson, Parton Farm selling a single lamb to £130.80 to Mr Helliwell.
Messrs Little, The Hollands topped the pence per kilo at 310.3ppk again for a single Beltex to Mr A Dawson.
Texels sold to £128.80 from Messrs Todd, Longhurst, Brampton. Suffolks to £122 from Messrs Harrison, Baggrow Farm, Aspatria. Greyfaced to £99 from Messrs Telford, High Park Foot, Roadhead.
