Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 6th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a smaller show of 380 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 88 prime bulls forward achieving a very good trade throughout once again.  Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie and was purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Top pence per kilo of 214.5p was attained by Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle for one of their Limousin bulls; this was bought by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Black and whites sold to a top of £1335 for a Holstein Friesian from regular vendors Messrs Irving, Becton Hall, Canonbie purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and top overall pence per kilo of 174.5p was attained by Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods; Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton sold another to 170.5p again purchased by Bowland Foods. PRIME CATTLE: A small entry of only 37 prime steers and heifers forward, whereby a lot more could have been sold, with a very good trade achieved once again.  Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle attaining £1676.18, Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie sold another to £1612.77 both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Studholme also sold top price British Blue cross to £1623.50.  Top steer pence per kilo of 225.5p was received by Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport.  Heifers peaked at £1477.03 from Messrs Pearson once again and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold another to £1472.  Top overall pence per kilo of 237.5p was paid to Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands and was purchased by King Street Butchers.  Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage especially light weight butchers types.  Please advise entries for next weeks sale.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A small show of 257 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with a great ringside of buyers ensuring a sharper trade on the week.

Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side sold two outstanding British Blue cross cows for 772kg, 217.5p, £1679 and 838kg, 188.5p, £1579 bought by David Holmes and Owain Llyr.  Mr Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Maine Anjou for 805kg, 184.5p, £1485 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Murray, The Throp sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 804kg, 175.5p, £1411 to David Holmes.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith House run of cows topped at 871kg, 157.5p, £1371 for a British Blue cross to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Jardine, Newbigging sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 814kg, 156.5p, £1273 to Les Fell.

All classes of black and white cows were in great demand.  Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold a Holstein cross cow for 939kg, 143.5p, £1347 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill sold Holstein cross cows for 953kg, 132.5p, £1262 and 862kg, 141.5p, £1219 and 941kg, 127.5p, £1199 bought by Les Fell and Dovecote Park.  Brownrigg Hall Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 837kg, 145.5p, £1217 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm Holstein cross cows topped at 813kg, 149.5p, £1215 to Dovecote Park.  Castlesteads Farms sold a Holstein cross cow for 735kg, 162.5p, £1194 to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: 7 stock bulls were on offer where Messrs Neill & Sons, Thornington sold an outstanding Limousin stock bull for 1114kg, 172.5p, £1921 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths sold the top priced British Blue stock bull for 986kg, 146.5p, £1444 also to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 6th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which saw another terrific entry of 2011 prime lambs and 317 ewes.

An overall average of 231.89ppk was achieved which was beyond all expected rates pre sale.  Heavy lambs and smart export types had many fanciers throughout the sale.  A whopping 190 lots of sheep achieved £100 per head or more, to a sale leading £129 for a pair of cracking Beltex lambs shown by WL Musgrave & Son, Cardew Hall, Dalston, these sold to local butcher Stephen Wilson, Corby Hill, Carlisle.

Messrs Musgrave also sold a beautiful single Beltex lamb to top pence per kilo at 302.7p (37kg, £112) selling to Mr Robert Skelton, Dearham; Messrs Musgrave sold 23 lambs to average £112.98 a head (273.96ppk).

Messrs Morrow, The Paddock, Pelutho sold 2 lots of 54kg lambs to top the super heavy weights at £126 a head with his run of 28, 48kg lambs averaging £112.07.  Messrs Dobson, West End Farm, Allonby sold a run of 15, 48kg lambs to average £117.47 to a top of £119.  Messrs Walton, Greyside, Hexham sold a great run of lambs to a top of 300ppk for 37kg Beltex lambs which sold to Mr A Dawson, Sedburgh.

Suffolks sold to £118.80 for a single lamb from Messrs Watson, Oakbank, Carlisle and to 253.3p for a pair from Messrs Brough, The Clappers, Wigton.

EWES: A larger entry of 320 cast ewes and rams were forward where trade was much sharper on the week with Mules showing the greatest increase easily achieving £80 plus.  Topping todays sale at £128.50 was a Beltex ewe from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle.  Texel cross ewes easily passing the £100 mark.
